How Paul Ryan's Budget Will Hurt Women
Remember early 2010? It was before the ACA (aka Obamacare) bill was signed into law. Women often had to pay more than men for identical health insurance. We could be kicked off our health insurance plans for the sin of being sick. Being female was basically considered a pre-existing condition. Millions of Americans lacked health insurance. Getting sick could mean going broke. It was dystopian.
To Paul Ryan those were the good old days. He’d like them back. His new budget turns back the clock and lets insurance companies run the show.
In Paul Ryan’s perfect world:
- The 27 million women who were eligible for lifesaving preventive health services like mammograms and cervical cancer screenings would again have to pay out-of-pocket for this care.
- Birth control would no longer be guaranteed to be covered (Viagra might still be covered though).
- According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, under the Ryan budget, at least 40 million people (1 in 8) would become uninsured by 2024 by repealing the ACA's exchange subsidies and Medicaid expansion.
Who would want to romanticize the dark days before health care reform?! Rep. Paul Ryan apparently.
We also remember 2012, when Ryan ran as VP on this platform…and lost.
