Republicans Speak Out Against Their Own Party on State Attacks on Women’s Health

As more and more state legislatures continue to push extreme and dangerous legislation designed to restrict (and in many cases virtually ban) access to safe and legal abortion in the states — some Republican legislators are speaking out.

In Wisconsin, State Sen. Dale Schultz knows it’s a “huge mistake if your ear is not in tune where people are.” Interestingly, Schultz was the co-sponsor of a bill that would shut down women’s health centers and restrict abortion in his state.  Despite his earlier support of restrictions, Schultz is now concerned that “we were pushing people too fast.  All we’re going to do is panic people and this is going to blow up if we don’t begin to moderate some of this stuff.”

Forty years after the U.S. Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade that recognized the constitutional right to privacy and a woman’s right to make her own personal medical decisions, Americans are still standing by this decision — with 7 in 10 Americans believing Roe v. Wade should remain the law of the land. Unfortunately, the state attacks have pickedup dramatically in the three years.

Republicans should support their party’s founding principles of smaller and smarter government — and keep health care decisions personal and private, left up to a woman, her family, and her faith with the counsel of her doctor — AND without government intrusion.
