Will Eliminate Women’s Access to Basic Preventive Health Care

Washington, DC — As women across America kick off National Women’s Health Week, Mitt Romney continues to put politics ahead of women’s health.  As an opponent of funding for family planning and basic health and reproductive services, Mitt Romney’s policies would cut services and access for millions of American women, including lifesaving cancer screenings and birth control.  Just this morning, President Obama issued a Presidential Proclamation highlighting the importance of women getting health check ups.

“While Planned Parenthood is urging women to make their health a priority by scheduling potentially lifesaving cancer screenings and checkups, Mitt Romney publicly opposes women’s ability to access these basic health services,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund.  “The doors of Planned Parenthood health centers are open today and they will be tomorrow.  For the one in five women in America who rely on Planned Parenthood at some point in her lifetime, the contrast between Mitt Romney and President Obama could not be any starker.”

The Planned Parenthood Action Fund applauds President Obama’s proclamation on women’s health this week.

Planned Parenthood is the nation’s leading sexual and reproductive health provider and advocate, providing care to nearly three million people annually.  Those services include nearly 750,000 breast exams, four million STD tests, and 770,000 Pap tests.

“Planned Parenthood cares for the women who would be hurt by Mitt Romney’s policies — they are our mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends,” said Richards.  “The bottom line is that prevention saves lives and taxpayer money.”

National Women’s Health Week is coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health, and brings together communities, businesses, government, health organizations like the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance and the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, and other groups in an effort to promote women’s health.

MITT ROMNEY’S RECORD ON WOMEN’S HEALTH

Mitt Romney

  • pledges to “get rid” of Planned Parenthood,” denying women access to birth control and cancer screenings
  • would end the nation’s family planning program, which provides preventive care to nearly five million women, and cut off access to birth control for women who need it the most
  • supports “personhood “efforts, which have been rejected in CO, OK, and MS, and could ban common forms of birth control and IVF
  • wants to see Roe v. Wade overturned and end safe and legal abortion
