Lizz Winstead’s Planned Parenthood Tour vs. Romney and Perry in New Hampshire

Contact: Planned Parenthood Action Fund Media Office, 212-261-4433

For Immediate Release: 10.27.11

With the presidential primary heating up in New Hampshire, three events in Manchester, New Hampshire on Friday night will involve Planned Parenthood.

ONE: political satirist Lizz Winstead, co-creator of The Daily Show and co-founder of Air America Radio, brings her “Planned Parenthood, I’m Here for You” comedy tour to New Hampshire.

Winstead started the tour over the summer in response to Congressional attacks against Planned Parenthood.  Proceeds from this show will benefit Planned Parenthood of Northern New England Action Fund.

As the Concord Monitor describes, “While hunkering, Winstead observed the Republican budget-cutting attempts that took aim at National Public Radio and Planned Parenthood and the subsequent state-level maneuvers to de-fund the organization.  Irked by the proposals – of which, she added, ‘New Hampshire has had some of the craziest’ - Winstead decided to wield her wit for the cause.”

In contrast, Mitt Romney and Rick Perry will be campaigning in Manchester and talking about their priorities, including barring Planned Parenthood from providing preventive health care through federal programs, cutting off access to birth control and cancer screenings, and overturning Roe v. Wade.

“Look out New Hampshire – Friday night both Romney and Perry are rolling into Manchester.  Wow.  It'll be raining golf ball-sized fail,” said Winstead.

TWO:  Rick Perry will be speaking at the conservative group Cornerstone Action’s annual dinner.  Perry has
often bragged on the campaign trail how he has cut access to women’s health by barring Planned Parenthood from providing preventive health care through public health programs.

THREE: Mitt Romney will be holding a town hall forum with voters in Manchester.  Romney, too, has attacked Planned Parenthood, saying he would prohibit Planned Parenthood from providing preventive health care through federal programs.

At a town hall last week in Iowa, Romney also flip-flopped in his position on birth control and the “personhood” amendment.

It is important to remember Perry and Romney’s positions are far out-of-the-mainstream, and opposed by a majority of Americans.

Planned Parenthood health centers are trusted nonprofit health care providers to which one in five women has turned at some point in her life for preventive health care and information, including birth control, lifesaving cancer screenings, STD testing, and annual exams.

Multiple polls show majority support for Planned Parenthood, especially among young and female voters, who are critical to the 2012 elections.

Gallup poll: Fifty-seven percent of Americans oppose “a law prohibiting health clinics that provide abortion services from receiving any federal funds.” (Gallup, 7/25/11)

CNN poll:  Sixty-five percent of Americans “think the federal government should continue to provide funding to Planned Parenthood.”  This includes 68 percent of women and 58 percent of independents. (CNN.com, 4/11/11)

Quinnipiac poll:  Voters opposed “cutting off federal government funding to Planned Parenthood” by a margin of 53 percent to 43 percent.  Opposition was even stronger among 18- to 34-year-olds (66 percent) and self-described moderates (60 percent). (Quinnipiac University, 3/3/2011)

NBC/WSJ poll:  Fifty-three percent of respondents — and 60 percent of 18- to 49-year-old women — found it “mostly or totally unacceptable” to “eliminate funding to Planned Parenthood for family planning and preventive health services.” (NBC/Wall Street Journal, 3/3/2011)
