The Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, announced its endorsement of Democratic candidate Richard Blumenthal, the current Connecticut attorney general, in the state’s upcoming race for the U.S. Senate.

“The Planned Parenthood Action Fund is proud to endorse Richard Blumenthal for U.S. senator,” said Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. “Blumenthal has been a strong advocate for women and women’s reproductive health care rights throughout his long career in public service. As a U.S. senator, he will continue to fight for women and women’s health.”

Blumenthal, who is currently serving his fifth term as Connecticut’s attorney general, has an outstanding record of promoting and protecting women’s health. He supports commonsense policies to improve access to quality health care, including reproductive health care for women; protecting a woman’s right to choose; strengthening comprehensive sex education to keep our young people healthy and safe; and investing in prevention programs, including family planning services and lifesaving breast cancer screenings.

In 2008, Blumenthal led the attorneys general of 13 states to oppose former President George W. Bush’s anti-choice midnight rule that posed a serious threat to patients’ rights to receive complete and accurate health care information and services. As Blumenthal told the Associated Press in 2008, the rule “puts personal agendas before patient care” and does not “acknowledge the rights of rape victims and others to access birth control and related vital health services.” When Bush persisted in passing the rule, Blumenthal joined with six other states to file a federal lawsuit asking for the regulation to be thrown out.

“The voters in Connecticut are looking for a champion of women’s health,” said Judy Tabar, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Votes! Connecticut. “Richard Blumenthal is that candidate. He will stand up for women and families and put commonsense health care needs ahead of ideology and politics.”

The election will be held on November 2.
