The Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, announced its endorsement of Democratic candidate Joe Sestak in Pennsylvania’s upcoming race for an open seat in the U.S. Senate.

“The Planned Parenthood Action Fund is proud to endorse Joe Sestak for U.S. senator,” said Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. “Joe is a passionate advocate for women and women’s reproductive rights and has a strong record of promoting and protecting women’s health.”

As U.S. Representative for Pennsylvania’s Seventh Congressional District since 2007, Sestak has advocated for women’s reproductive rights both domestically and abroad. He supported a commonsense policy to expand access to women’s health by providing contraceptives and condoms to developing countries and international health care organizations.

In 2009, Sestak co-sponsored bills supporting comprehensive services for rape victims at all hospitals receiving government funding and expanded access to mammograms for women at high risk for breast cancer. Sestak has a 100 percent rating from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

“The voters in Pennsylvania are looking for a champion of women’s health to be their next Senator,” said Sari Stevens, executive director of the Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Advocates. “Joe Sestak is that candidate. He will stand up for women and families and put commonsense health care needs ahead of ideology and politics.”

With more than 185,000 supporters statewide and as the only pro-choice grassroots political organization in Pennsylvania, Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Advocates is proud to support Rep. Joe Sestak and will work hard elect him to the U.S. Senate.

“As a U.S. Senator, Sestak will work to improve access to quality health care for women, support and protect a woman's right to choose, strengthen comprehensive sex education to keep our young people healthy and safe, and invest in prevention programs, including family planning services and breast cancer screenings,” said Stevens.

The election will be held on November 2.
