Planned Parenthood Action Fund Endorses Scott Peters for Congress in CA-52

Washington, DC — Planned Parenthood Action Fund announces its endorsement of Scott Peters for California’s 52nd Congressional District today. The Action Fund is the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

“We are proud to endorse Scott Peters for Congress today,” said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. “Scott Peters will be a tireless advocate for women and middle-class families and we are confident he will stand up to those in Congress who continue to launch attacks on women’s access to health care.”

Scott Peters will be a champion for women. Peters has vowed to protect access to contraception and will work to ensure that abortion remains safe and legal if he is elected to Congress.

Peters is running against incumbent Representative Brian Bilbray. Rep. Brian Bilbray is dangerous for women and women’s health. While in Congress, Rep. Bilbray:

- voted to eliminate the Title X Family Planning Program which millions of women and families depend upon for their health care; and
- voted to cut off Planned Parenthood's federal funding, putting at risk the cancer screenings, birth control, STD testing and treatment, and other preventive care that nearly three million Americans rely on each year.

“Scott Peters understands that health care in America needs to be accessible and affordable for everybody and has vowed he will be an active and strong advocate for women’s health care access in Congress,” said Julie Bornstein, chair of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest. “Women and families in California’s 52nd Congressional District can count on Scott Peters to fight for them in Washington and to put women’s health care needs ahead of ideology and politics.”

In 2011, the 115 Planned Parenthood health centers located in California served 768,111 patients by providing a wide range of preventive health care services, including 95,888 breast exams that detected 1,638 abnormal results that required further diagnosis and treatment, and 116,630 cervical cancer screenings (i.e., Pap tests) that detected 18,420 abnormal results that required further diagnosis and treatment.
