The Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced its endorsement of Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) in her re-election campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives. The Planned Parenthood Action Fund is the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

“Even before she became the first woman elected to national office from New Hampshire, Carol Shea-Porter was a powerful voice for equality and women’s rights,” said Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. “Shea-Porter has always been a strong ally in support of women’s health and reproductive health care. We need her in Congress more than ever to continue the fight to expand access to women’s health care.”

As U.S. Representative for New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District since 2007, Shea-Porter has advocated for women’s reproductive rights, women’s health care services, and equal treatment of women at home and abroad. In the fight for health care reform, Shea-Porter fought to protect a woman’s right to choose by voting against the anti-choice Stupak amendment. She has brought substantial funding to her home state of New Hampshire for programs aimed at decreasing violence against women. Shea-Porter has also co-sponsored legislation condemning abusive practices against women in other countries and protecting American girls against female genital mutilation.

“Voters in New Hampshire are looking for a champion of women’s health, and they know that Carol Shea-Porter has been and will continue to be that candidate,” said Steve Trombley, CEO of the Planned Parenthood of Northern New England Action Fund. “Carol Shea-Porter is a passionate and inspiring voice for women, and New Hampshire voters can count on her to stand up for women and families and put commonsense health care needs ahead of ideology and politics.”

If Shea-Porter is re-elected, she will continue to be a strong advocate in Congress for women’s rights and women’s health, including improving access to quality health care for women, fighting to end discrimination and violence against women, supporting and protecting a woman's right to choose, strengthening comprehensive sex education to keep our young people healthy and safe, and investing in prevention programs, including family planning services and breast cancer screenings.

The election will be held on November 2.
