RICHMOND, VA — In the final days before the election, Planned Parenthood Votes and Planned Parenthood Virginia PAC mobilized volunteers and supporters to help get out the vote for women’s health champions Terry McAuliffe and other Democratic candidates, knocking 10,000 doors statewide Saturday through today.
Planned Parenthood Action Fund has also launched a series of online banner ads urging Virginians to commit to vote. One features a picture of Ken Cuccinelli and reads “Don’t let Cuccinelli turn back the clock on women’s health.” Another reads “Vote to protect women’s health November 5.”

This is the culmination of an eight-month, multi-layered $2.4 million dollar campaign to educate and mobilize Virginia voters around women’s health. Planned Parenthood political and advocacy organizations launched the Keep Ken Out campaign in February, and in the months leading up to Election Day, reached hundreds of thousands of voters to make sure they knew the truth about Ken Cuccinelli’s record and agenda for women’s health.
The women we reached know that affordable and accessible health care and birth control are economic issues, and believe that politicians like Ken Cuccinelli are overreaching when it comes to limiting access to safe and legal abortion. Over the course of the campaign, we have knocked an estimated 75,000 doors, made an estimated 26,000 phone calls, and sent mail to over 155,000 households.
On October 2, Planned Parenthood Votes announced a million dollar TV and radio ad buy in the Richmond and Norfolk media markets. You can watch the first TV ad “Own Decisions” here and the second TV ad “Wrong” (announced October 22) here. You can listen to the radio ad here.
Additionally, on October 29, Planned Parenthood Votes announced a $100,000 radio ad buy warning that Virginia attorney general candidate Mark Obenshain shares the same dangerous positions on women’s health as gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli. You can listen to the ad here.
“This race presents a stark contrast between two candidates with very different views on issues that affect women’s lives. Terry McAuliffe has made it clear that he trusts women and doctors to make their own health care decisions. He recognizes that the people of Virginia want a governor who will create jobs and strengthen the economy, not attack women's health care,” said Cianti Stewart-Reid, executive director of Planned Parenthood Virginia PAC.
“Just as we saw in 2012, Virginians are engaged and eager to stand with candidates who support women’s health. So once again, we are working to educate Virginia women about the stark contrast between Ken Cuccinelli and Terry McAuliffe and to make sure they get out the vote on November 5.
“These are real health and economic issues facing Virginia women and their families. Women are half the population — we are a key part of the economy. Ken Cuccinelli will not be able to bring jobs to the commonwealth, encourage new businesses to grow, or support innovation while sending women back decades,” said Stewart-Reid.
