Planned Parenthood Advocacy Organizations Amplify Campaign to Educate Nevada Voters About Mitt Romney’s and Dean Heller’s Dangerous Agenda for Women

Part of Growing Effort to Help Elect Lifelong Advocate for Women Shelley Berkley to U.S. Senate

Three-Part Mail Campaign Targeting 40,000 Households

WASHINGTON — Nevada Advocates for Planned Parenthood Affiliates rolled out the second piece in a three-part mail campaign today highlighting the dangerous similarities between Nevada Senate candidate Dean Heller and Mitt Romney on issues of importance to women, women’s health and women’s economic security. The mail piece, “Respect,” targets 40,000 households and is part of a joint effort with Planned Parenthood Votes to help elect Representative Shelley Berkley, a lifelong advocate for women, to the U.S. Senate.

The second mail piece, “Respect,” drops today. You can view it here.

The mailer highlights Mitt Romney’s and Dean Heller’s out-of-touch plan to eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood preventive health care services and their support for the Blunt amendment that would allow bosses to refuse coverage of birth control in their health insurance plans. It also highlights Heller’s vote against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which guarantees women equal pay for equal work.

On one side it reads, “This election is about who respects me enough to let me make MY OWN HEALTH CARE DECISIONS,” and on the other side it reads, “Mitt Romney and Dean Heller do not RESPECT our ability to make our own choices.”

The first piece, “Leaders,” dropped on Saturday, October 20. You can view it here.

The third and final piece, “Birth Control,” is shaped like a pink pill pack, and will drop on Saturday, October 27. You can view it here.

“The more Nevada women learn about Mitt Romney’s and Dean Heller’s record and positions on women’s health, the more appalled they are,” said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund. "Politics has no place in a woman’s personal medical decisions. Women voters in Nevada believe that, and in November their votes will reflect it.”Planned Parenthood Votes also announced today that it will target the same demographic of voters with two rounds of persuasion calls highlighting Heller’s dismal record on women’s issues.

“Shelley Berkley is the lifelong advocate who has always been there for Nevada women,” said Elisa Cafferata, president and CEO, Nevada Advocates for Planned Parenthood Affiliates. “As our senator, I am confident she will continue to fight for women’s health — protecting access to birth control and preventive health care for all of us.”

Mitt Romney and Dean Heller on the issues:

  • Mitt Romney and Dean Heller would eliminate federal funding for Planned Parenthood, limiting Nevada women’s access to lifesaving cancer screenings and preventive care. [KSDK-TV, 3/13/12; H.1, Roll Call Vote # 93, 2/18/11]
  • Romney and Heller would also allow our bosses to deny insurance coverage for any essential health services they object to — including birth control. [CBS News, 2/29/12; Las Vegas Review-Journal, 3/01/12]
  • And if that wasn’t bad enough, Dean Heller actually voted to deny women equal pay for equal work. [S. 181, Roll Call Vote #37, 1/27/09]
