14 New Pro-choice Senators and Representatives Win Elections Hagan, Shaheen, M. Udall, T. Udall, Warner all pro-choice pickups
The Planned Parenthood Action Fund applauds key congressional victories and the 14 new pro-choice senators and representatives who so far early this Tuesday evening have won election to Congress. (Full list below).
The Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s One Million Strong Campaign mobilized one million pro-choice, pro-women’s health voters across the country, including in key states such as North Carolina and New Hampshire, helping propel Kay Hagan and Jeanne Shaheen to victory.
“Today, voters across America voted for change and voted for women’s health. In January, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund launched the One Million Strong Campaign, to educate and turn out one million pro-choice and pro-women’s health voters and send the message that women’s health matters. Today, that message was received loud and clear as pro-choice and pro-women’s health candidates across the country won key elections,” said Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
“We are thrilled that Planned Parenthood Action Fund-endorsed Senate candidates Kay Hagan, Jeanne Shaheen, Mark Udall, and Tom Udall won their elections and congratulate them on their victories. We look forward to working with them to promote and protect women’s health in the U.S. Congress,” said Richards.
The Planned Parenthood Action Fund mobilized thousands of volunteers in aggressive grassroots efforts in Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin, including door-to-door canvassing, phone banking, and other GOTV efforts.
The Planned Parenthood Action Fund also launched a mail program targeting undecided women voters who are concerned about women’s health in five Senate races --Georgia, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Oregon -- sending more than two million pieces of mail to more than 536,000 voters.
“Women and families are the real winners in this election,” Richards said. “The number of new pro-choice and pro-women’s health members of Congress represents a major step toward getting our country back on track and ensuring that our lawmakers have the right priorities, like support for women’s health care.”
