Washington DC — Planned Parenthood Votes is launching a new TV ad today holding Mitt Romney accountable for his renewed promise yesterday to “immediately” get rid of federal funding for the preventive care services like cancer screenings and birth control that Planned Parenthood health centers provide to millions of women.

You can watch the 30-second TV ad here.

The ad is part of the organization’s campaign targeting women voters in key battleground states and highlights Mitt Romney’s extreme positions on issues of importance to women and their health, including his pledge to “get rid” of Planned Parenthood and his stance to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The ad “Mitt Romney: Still Completely Wrong on Women's Health” will go into rotation in Colorado and Virginia — two critical battleground states, where women’s votes will determine the outcome of November’s presidential election.

“No matter how much he talks around his record, Mitt Romney is wrong for women’s health.  Mitt Romney has said over and over again that he will defund Planned Parenthood if elected. Women deserve to know what his extreme position means: it means that millions of women would not get the lifesaving breast cancer screenings, birth control and other preventive care that Planned Parenthood health centers provide every day,” said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

When Mitt Romney talks about eliminating federal funding for Planned Parenthood, it’s important to remember that it has nothing to do with funding and everything to do with his plan to inject politics where they don’t belong — between a woman and her doctor.

  • Nearly three million patients come to Planned Parenthood health centers every year — not to make a political statement but to get high-quality, affordable health care.
  • One in five women in the U.S. has visited a Planned Parenthood health center at least once in her life.
  • More than 90 percent of the services Planned Parenthood health centers provide are preventive (cancer screenings, STD tests, birth control etc.).
  • Planned Parenthood health centers see more than two million patients for birth control, conduct nearly 750,000 breast exams, and provide more than four million STI tests/treatments annually.
  • Republicans have consistently supported federal family planning programs that provide birth control and other preventive care to low-income women.
    • In 1969, then-Representative George H. W. Bush proclaimed, “We need to make family planning a household word.”
    • In 1970, President Richard Nixon led the charge in pushing for Congress to increase funding for family planning, “No American woman should be denied access to family planning assistance because of her economic condition.”
  • Federal funds cannot fund abortion services at Planned Parenthood health centers. In 1976, Congress passed the Hyde Amendment, which forbids federal funding for abortion under the Medicaid program. The only exceptions are in cases of rape, incest and danger to the life of the woman.

The script reads:

Voice Over:  Mitt Romney sure has been talking a lot.
But all that talk can’t hide Romney’s real agenda that hurts women:
Romney:  "The actions I'll take immediately are to remove funding for Planned Parenthood."
Romney:  "Do I want to overturn Roe v. Wade, yes"
Voice Over:  And Mitt Romney would go back to letting insurance companies charge women more.
Voice Over:  Planned Parenthood Votes is Responsible for the content of this advertising because no matter how much he talks around his record Mitt Romney is wrong for women’s health.
