As the Republican Platform Committee meets today in Tampa to debate and vote on the 2012 Republican Party Platform, Republicans for Planned Parenthood co-chair Randy Moody will be there to submit a women’s health plank for the platform and request its consideration by the Committee.
“This election is about the economic issues that the majority of American families care about, which include access to health care and family planning and the ability for women to make their own decisions about their health,” said Randy Moody, co-chair of Republicans for Planned Parenthood. “Unfortunately, there is a faction within the Republican Party whose priorities are out of step with the majority of Republicans and the American people when it comes to these issues. I am going to Tampa to speak up for the majority of Republicans that still believe in personal freedom and individual responsibility, the same values that make me a steadfast supporter of women’s access to reproductive health care.”
This year, some Republicans have continued to pursue policies that would take away critical preventive health care from women — and take personal medical decisions out of a woman’s hands. They intend to end funding for Planned Parenthood, which would cut women off from the cancer screenings, birth control, STD testing and treatment, and other preventive care that nearly three million Americans rely on each year. In addition, they want to overturn Roe v. Wade and ban safe and legal abortion, a decision that should be left up to a woman, her family, and her faith, with the counsel of her doctor or health care provider.
“The nearly three million people who go to Planned Parenthood’s health centers in a year aren’t going there to make a political statement — they’re going there because they want high-quality health care. If this isn’t personal responsibility, I don’t know what is,” says Moody.
