For Immediate Release: 07.01.13

Austin, TX — As thousands of Texans rally again today to oppose legislative attacks that would endanger women’s health, actor Connie Britton and Planned Parenthood Action Fund released a new limited edition T-shirt to help people around the country show their support for Texas women.

The front of the shirt reads: “WWTTD? What Would Tami Taylor Do?” and the back of the shirt says “standwithtexaswomen.org.” Britton starred as Tami Taylor in the critically acclaimed TV series Friday Night Lights, about a high school football team in the community of Dillon, Texas. The shirts, which are in orange or white, are available here and are being sold at cost. They will be available for the month of July only.

"The character Tami on Friday Night Lights is a Texas woman deeply committed to her community and to standing up for what is right for her neighbors and the people she loves. I have been inspired by how people around the country have united to stand with the women of Texas, and I can't help but think that, in this moment, we all have the opportunity to join with and become strong, powerful Texas men and women," said Britton, who was Emmy-nominated for Friday Night Lights and is a three-time Emmy and recent Golden Globe nominee.

Sweeping restrictions on abortion — which could shut down 36 of 42 health centers that provide abortion in Texas, many of which also provide cancer screenings, STD testing and birth control — failed to pass during the regular legislative session and failed to pass during a special session that concluded last week with an epic, 13-hour filibuster by State Senator Wendy Davis. Governor Rick Perry called yet another month-long special session, which begins today.

“These laws threaten women’s health and safety,” said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, who is in Austin today. “Like people across the country, Connie Britton saw thousands of Texans stand up last week and demand to be heard, and she wanted to stand with them. She’s partnering with Planned Parenthood Action Fund on this shirt so that people all across the country can show their support.”
