NEW JERSEY — Yesterday, Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (NJ-07) voted to elect Mike Johnson (LA-04) as the new speaker of the House of Representatives. Rep. Johnson has a long record of opposing sexual and reproductive health care. He co-sponsored legislation to ban abortion nationwide, led efforts to undermine the results of the 2020 election, and wants to restrict reproductive health care for service members and transgender Americans – including New Jerseyans.

The majority of New Jerseyans support abortion rights and do not want politicians making their personal health care decisions, something Rep. Kean ignored while casting his vote.

Statement from Jackie Cornell, Executive Director, Planned Parenthood Action Fund of New Jersey:

“Rep. Kean is putting his partisan loyalties ahead of New Jerseyans. Mike Johnson as speaker is disastrous for reproductive rights. He’s never tried to hide the ball: he wants to ban abortion full out, across the country. Rep. Kean is complicit in this dangerous legislative agenda. With this vote, Rep. Kean proves that he is a yes man for his party and its anti-abortion agenda – not an advocate for New Jerseyan’s access to sexual and reproductive health.”
