These trailblazing women are the legislative champions we need

In PPMM’s California affiliate region, we have three intrepid women lawmakers – Mia Bonta, Anna Caballero, and Nancy Skinner -- who are fighting hard to expand and protect abortion care-access.  And we need them more than ever right now as other states rush to pass draconian anti-abortion laws.

Many members of anti-reproductive rights state legislatures are no longer waiting for the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health to severely restrict or overturn abortion rights. They have been especially emboldened since the court did not stop immediate enactment of the Texas SB 8 six-week abortion ban, which deputizes private citizens as “bounty hunters” to file lawsuits against anyone providing or abetting an abortion.

Idaho and Oklahoma also recently moved to criminalize abortion, putting patients and abortion providers in danger.

But our champions in the California legislature are making history by protecting and expanding abortion care here for patients, providers and all those who support them.

Newly elected Assemblymember Mia Bonta (Alameda, San Leandro and Oakland) is sponsoring AB 2091 - Protecting Patient Confidentiality. Asm. Bonta is a former school board member and experienced non-profit leader. Elected to the Assembly in 2021, she was quick to make reproductive justice central to her legislative priorities.

State Sen. Anna Caballero, (parts of Salinas Valley and Central Valley) and State Sen. Nancy Skinner (Oakland, Berkeley and parts of Contra Costa County) are co-sponsoring SB 1142 - Support for Practical Assistance Organizations and Infrastructure. This fierce pair has a combined 74 years of public service, policy change, and advocacy.  From the Bay Area to the Monterey and San Santa Cruz County Coast to agricultural communities in the Central Valley, these trailblazers are spearheading life-changing legislation.

One bill will strengthen patient confidentiality under California’s Reproductive Privacy Act, protecting patient identities for anyone receiving abortion care in the state.

Another bill will provide critical support to abortion–access funds that subsidize overnight lodging, transportation, and child care for patients who otherwise would not have access to abortion services.

Even in California, where the right to abortion is enshrined in the state constitution, we must do more to secure access to this essential care, especially in the state’s “abortion deserts” where there are no nearby providers. Abortion is health care, and it must be easily accessible.
