Survey results show Americans want to protect abortion nationwide and will vote for candidates who support reproductive freedom

(Portland, MAINE) – As voters in states across the country this week affirmed support for safe, legal abortion, a new survey shows voters in battleground congressional districts distrust Republicans and view the party’s anti-abortion platform as extreme.

The survey, released by Navigator Research Wednesday, shows 2 in 3 battleground voters think abortion should be legal in all or most circumstances. As the Republican Party scrambles to rebrand its unpopular anti-abortion agenda, the survey shows the GOP has eroded public trust; by a 2-to-1 margin, survey respondents said they trust Democrats more than Republicans on abortion. Sixty percent support a law that would protect abortion nationwide –- a stark contrast to the ongoing push from anti-abortion politicians for a national abortion ban

Consistent with polling released in October, respondents of the survey released this week view Republicans as too extreme on abortion and worry GOP politicians will try to pass more restrictions on the medical procedure. Battleground voters, according to the survey, also say they are more likely to cast ballots for congressional candidates who support legal abortion over those who favor bans.

Statement from Lisa Margulies, Esq., Vice President of Public Affairs, Planned Parenthood of Northern New England and Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund:

“This poll, and this week’s election results, tell us what we have known all along: protecting access to abortion is a winning issue. Americans believe pregnant people, in consultation with their doctors, should be able to make private medical decisions without political interference.

We saw this in Maine, when voters turned out in record numbers in November 2022 to elect reproductive rights champions to the state legislature, and when those elected leaders listened to their constituents, to doctors and to patient advocates, and passed compassionate, evidence-based policy that makes Maine a leader in protecting and expanding access to abortion in our post-Roe world.

We look forward to working with lawmakers next year to further protect our reproductive rights and freedoms in Maine.”
