On January 22, 2019, the 46th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Rep. Tim Miller (R-Prinsburg) introduced a bill that would make abortion illegal after six weeks—before most women are even aware that they are pregnant. This is an extreme move that jeopardizes women’s health, defying constitutional rights and all medical standards for reproductive health care.
Sarah Stoesz, President of the Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund:
“Make no mistake, the bill introduced today is a serious attack on Minnesotans' health and safety. It bans abortion before most women even know they are pregnant and is fundamentally out of touch with the people of our state. The majority of Minnesotans believe people need access to safe and legal abortion so they can decide what’s best for their health and for their families, without interference from politicians.”
"If Republican lawmakers want to decrease the need for abortion, we invite them to work across the aisle to ensure that people have access to affordable birth control. We welcome their support for Minnesota’s Protect Access to Contraception (PAC) Act, which will be introduced this session and would protect no-cost birth control for more than one million women in our state. Supporting this bill gives Republican lawmakers the opportunity to increase people’s ability to get birth control and decrease the need for abortion.”
