June 27, 2018, Supreme Court Justice Kennedy announced he will retire and so President Trump will now have the opportunity to nominate his replacement. Justice Kennedy was often a deciding vote in the Court’s decisions to uphold abortion rights and President Trump has promised to only appoint justices who will overturn Roe v. Wade.
The following is a statement from Sarah Stoesz, President of the Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund:
“The significance of today’s news cannot be overstated. We are now faced with the reality that Roe v. Wade and the right to safe and legal abortion are at serious risk.
While today’s news is devastating, it is also a call to action. It underscores that elections matter and every vote matters. In Minnesota this year, we have the opportunity to re-elect two U.S. Senators who will use their voices in Congress to defend human rights and to elect a governor who will protect us here at home.”
Every day, more people turn to Planned Parenthood to be their voice of hope for the future. Together, we will make sure Planned Parenthood patients always get the care they need. Planned Parenthood's mission does not change in the face of this news.”
