PLANNED PARENTHOOD AND PARTNERS TO BUS MORE THAN 100 REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS ACTIVISTS TO WASHINGTON DC FOR MEDICATION ABORTION HEARING
For Immediate Release: March 25, 2024 (Updated: March 25, 2024, 6 a.m.)
(Philadelphia, Pa.) — Planned Parenthood PA will bus 105 reproductive rights activists to Washington D.C. tomorrow, March 26 for the Supreme Court of the United States’ opening arguments in the case regarding medication abortion.
SCOTUS will soon decide whether or not to maintain the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) decades long approval of mifepristone, one of two medications most commonly used in a medication abortion.. Mifepristone (often called ‘mife’) has a safety record of over 99 percent and is used in the vast majority of abortions in Pennsylvania and other states.
“This Supreme Court is one of the most hostile, anti abortion bench we have ever seen and our rights are at risk,” said Planned Parenthood Association of Pennsylvania Executive Director Signe Espinoza. “They aren’t going to stop with Dobbs, we have every reason to believe their subsequent rulings will be just as politically motivated, funded by extreme anti-abortion actors, and designed solely to ban abortion, birth control, and the full spectrum of sexual and reproductive health care nationwide - but we will be there. They will have to see us as they strip away our autonomy and humanity. We won’t stay quiet, we won’t be hidden.”
While abortion remains legal in Pennsylvania, a study by the Guttmacher Institute shows that the state will be among the top 10 most impacted by a mifepristone ban - due to its standing in the region as one of the only abortion access states but also the geographic challenges of the state’s provision of abortion care.
The share of counties with an abortion provider would drop from 19% to as low as 15%
The share of women of reproductive age living in a county with an abortion provider would drop from 63% to as low as 54%
Planned Parenthood Association of Pennsylvania will be joined by ACLU and other organizations in Washington, D.C.. Planned Parenthood Federation of America estimates several thousand advocates for reproductive freedom will be gathered outside the court.
