Sioux Falls, SD— Yesterday, Governor Noem announced her intent to introduce an abortion ban to the Legislature. While the bill language has not yet been released, Governor Noem has said the bill would ban some early abortions in the state based on the results of prenatal genetic testing. Below is a statement from Kristin Hayward, Manager of Advocacy in South Dakota for Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota Action Fund:
“The South Dakota legislature has and will try anything to eliminate access to abortion in the state and this inflammatory pledge only makes that more clear. This is just one more abortion ban from Governor Noem.
Abortion is a deeply personal and sometimes complex decision that must be left to each individual person, in consultation with their family, faith, and health care provider. Regardless of how one personally feels about abortion, it’s important that it remain a safe and legal medical procedure for a South Dakotan to consider if and when they need it. Ultimately, that’s not a decision you can make for someone else. You are not in their shoes."
