PPSAT Volunteers in SC, WV and VA share their experiences volunteering with Planned Parenthood and other local reproductive health community organizations
I started volunteering with Planned Parenthood for my senior capstone project. The goal for our capstone project was to volunteer at an organization that proposed a public health problem or issue. Since volunteering with Planned Parenthood, I have been involved as an HCAP volunteer, and tabling, which involves educating the public about the goals, missions, and importance of Planned Parenthood. I have also had the opportunity to collect stories for Planned Parenthood, which is important to the funding and progression of PP. Stories give a realistic example of how Planned Parenthood is improving the lives of women through services such as low priced or free birth control, STD testing services, and safe abortion services.
Planned Parenthood has helped me become a more empowered woman than I was beforehand. Volunteering here has shown me the true power of the female body, and the amazing things that women can endure and still be so strong. Planned Parenthood has helped me improve my public speaking skills, as I am constantly spelling to people about the mission of PP, and it has also taught me how to think on the spot. As many would classify PP as a controversial organization, people often will put volunteers of PP on the spot about what goes on with Planned Parenthood. Volunteering with Planned Parenthood has been a great experience, I enjoyed with working with the amazing people that I came in contact with, and I plan to continue in the future.
