HotSpots for May 1–31, 2010

HotSpots is a summary of incidents of harassment and violence directed at Planned Parenthood affiliates, national offices, and other reproductive health care providers, produced monthly by Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc.

South Carolina  05/29/10  The front door to a Planned Parenthood health center appeared to have been kicked in.

New York  05/28/10  A woman called a Planned Parenthood health center several times, and said that health center staff should be "beheaded" because they perform abortions.

New Hampshire  05/26/10  A Planned Parenthood staff member was driving her car into the health center parking lot and had an altercation with a man on his bicycle who refused to move out of the way of her vehicle. When asked to move the man became belligerent, yelling obscenities and pounding on the window of her car. Eventually the man rode away on his bicycle and the staff member made it safely into the health center.

Minnesota  05/22/10  Around 30 people held a protest at the site of a future Planned Parenthood health center.

New York  05/18/10  Two anti-choice pamphlets were found in a Planned Parenthood health center waiting room.  

California  05/17/10  The fence around a Planned Parenthood health center parking lot was spray-painted with an obscenity and an anti-choice statement.

New York  05/17/10  A staff member at a Planned Parenthood health center received a harassing, anti-choice e-mail. A few days later an envelope containing additional anti-choice material was sent to the same staff member.

New York  05/13/10  A patient visited a Planned Parenthood health center for a pregnancy test. During the appointment the patient began to talk about having had a prior abortion, how she subsequently found redemption in God and that health center staff needed God's forgiveness for informing women about abortion as an option.

New Jersey  05/08/10  Five protesters at a Planned Parenthood health center carried graphic signs and accused health center staff of being "terrorists."

Indiana  05/08/10  Around 30 protesters were present outside a hotel where there was a Planned Parenthood fundraiser. The group stationed themselves across the street and held graphic signs.

New Mexico  05/04/10  A man entered the parking lot of a Planned Parenthood health center and threw a rock through the window of a staff member's car.

Georgia  05/04/10  A Planned Parenthood health center moved, and on the first day open in the new location received a harassing voice mail asking them to pack up and leave.

Indiana  05/03/10  Protesters appeared twice at the home of a Planned Parenthood staff member. They held signs and shouted anti-choice statements.

Michigan 05/03/10  The front window of a Planned Parenthood health center was shattered by a thrown rock.

Multiple Sites  May 2010  Several affiliates received a harassing anti-gay e-mail containing one Bible passage from Leviticus.
