Washington, D.C. — Today, Senators. Rev. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) reintroduced the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, critical legislation to restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act. Nearly a dozen reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations highlighted the intersection of voting rights and reproductive rights:

“The right to vote and reproductive freedom are inextricably linked,” the groups said. “The dangerous agenda of anti-abortion rights politicians is rooted in their desire to control our bodies, lives and futures, and they use voter suppression tactics to stay in power. The overwhelming majority of people believe that politicians should not interfere in personal health care decisions and yet, some politicians remain unrelenting in their attacks on our fundamental freedoms. They defy the will of the people by supporting anti-democratic policies that embolden out-of-touch politicians to ban abortion. These attacks disproportionately harm people of color, women, LGBTQ+ people, and people with low incomes.

“Congress must act to protect our freedom. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is an essential step towards protecting the sacred right to vote, defending abortion rights, and saving our democracy.”
