Welcome to “The Quickie”

Welcome to “The Quickie” — Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s daily tipsheet on the top health care & reproductive rights stories of the day. You can read “The Quickie'' online here.

In today’s Quickie: Planned Parenthood Action Fund prez talks more about the impact of Alabama’s ruling and anti-abortion attacks continue in Congress.

“WHERE DOES THE BOUNDARY STOP?”: PLANNED PARENTHOOD ACTION FUND PRESIDENT ON THE ALABAMA IVF RULING: On Sunday, Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, joined MSNBC’s PoliticsNation with Reverend Al Sharpton to discuss the dangerous implications of Alabama’s Supreme Court ruling declaring embryos are children. Personhood laws meant to restrict abortion, threaten all reproductive care. As Alexis explained, “What these decisions do is not only deny the freedoms of us to decide whether and when to become parents, but they also are now saying how we become parents. They have inserted themselves in the private medical decisions related to reproductive health care like abortion — why wouldn’t they be able to do the same with IVF?” She continued, “Reproductive health care is all of it. So where does the boundary stop? Contraception, emergency contraception, pregnancy, miscarriage, fertility, IVF, and abortion they have always forecast that they are coming for all of these things and we should not be surprised”.

DON’T BE FOOLED: ANTI-ABORTION ATTACKS CONTINUE IN CONGRESS: Senator Lindsey Graham has introduced a national abortion ban every year for the last decade...except for this year, as support for abortion rights has reached a historic high. When asked by NBC News why he hasn’t introduced legislation this year, he said “I haven’t even thought about it.”

Oh Please!

The truth is, politicians are still working overtime to attack sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion — by any means necessary. They haven’t changed their views, they’ve only broadened their tactics to further strip people of their fundamental freedoms. The House majority has used FY24 appropriations bills to push one attack on sexual and reproductive health after another (we broke them down here).

In a statement to NBC News, Planned Parenthood Action Fund President and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson said Republicans are “trying to fly under the radar by hiding their true intentions with misleading bill names and attempting to force their dangerous agenda through must-pass government funding bills.”

No matter how much they try to rebrand harmful policy, it will not change the fact that banning abortion is unpopular and unsupported by the majority of the public. We see you. And we’ll make sure voters do, too.
