Not surprisingly, this week’s Gynotician of the Week is North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory.
After promising to enact no new abortion restrictions during his campaign in 2012, Governor McCrory signed into law sweeping anti-women’s health legislation that will dramatically restrict access to safe and legal abortion in the state. SB 353, better known as the “motorcycle vagina” bill because the abortion language was added to a motorcycle safety bill, strips city and county employees of abortion coverage, and denies women and their families the option of buying a health plan that covers abortion through the health care exchange, even though the federal law requires consumers use their own money to pay for it. A recent study shows that 80 percent of voters disapprove of the underhanded tactics used by the legislature to move this bill through the legislative process. 80 percent!
Over the past month, as lawmakers in North Carolina have used ever more creative ways to pass unpopular anti-women's health legislation, Governor McCrory has stood by and done nothing. Thousands of North Carolinians rallied, called their legislators, and organized to send a clear message to Governor McCrory: North Carolina women don’t want politicians interfering in their personal medical decisions. Governor McCrory has sent back a clear message of his own: women and families in North Carolina can’t trust him to keep his word or protect the health care of women. And to show how out-of-touch Governor McCrory truly is, after signing SB 353, he brought a plate of cookies to the protesters. Keep your cookies Pat, give us health care instead.
