In a hearing in federal district court on August 2, Planned Parenthood affiliates in Ohio stood up to an Ohio law that blocks patients from care at their health centers. The law is just one example of anti-abortion politicians’ efforts to block care at Planned Parenthood health centers to serve their ultimate aim of banning safe, legal abortion altogether. In fact, the states have introduced 445 provisions to restrict abortion access in 2016, according to a recent report from the Guttmacher Institute.
Guttmacher: Signs Of Progress But The Assault Continues
Efforts to block patients from accessing care at Planned Parenthood health centers have been going on for years, but they really ramped up after a slew of discredited, faked videos hit YouTube last summer. While the report did note signs of progress — like the Supreme Court’s victorious ruling in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt — it also found major setbacks in the fight against attacks on reproductive health care. Since July 2015, politicians in 24 states have taken action to block access to birth control, lifesaving cancer screenings, and other preventive care at Planned Parenthood health centers. Other highlights from the report include:
Politicians in 17 states have passed 46 new abortion restrictions since the beginning of 2016.
Since 2010, states have adopted 334 abortion restrictions — 30% of all abortion restrictions enacted since Roe v. Wade in 1973.
32 states attempted to ban all or some safe, legal abortion in the first half of 2016.
Restricting access to reproductive health services has real and disastrous consequences for all people. It also has a disproportionate impact on communities of color, who already face systemic barriers in accessing quality health care — as National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, In Our Own Voice, and other reproductive justice organizations demonstrated during the successful Supreme Court fight against Texas TRAP laws .
Planned Parenthood’s Deception Decoder Exposes The Lies
Not only do these measures seek to restrict access to safe, legal abortion or target the basic health care that Planned Parenthood health centers provide, but many anti-abortion politicians are hiding their attacks behind neutral or even “pro-woman-sounding” bill titles. It’s outrageous, deceptive, and insulting. Luckily, Planned Parenthood’s new informative tool, the deception decoder, exposes attacks on women’s health and safe, legal abortion disguised as well-meaning legislation.
Planned Parenthood will not let anti-women’s health extremists use fraud and deception to shut down the health centers that one in five American women has relied on. Planned Parenthood has been there for the communities it serves with health care and education for nearly 100 years — and will continue to fight for its patients.
