Anti-abortion zealot Brian Kemp will face reproductive rights champion Stacey Abrams tonight at 7 p.m. EST

ATLANTA — Ahead of tonight’s Georgia gubernatorial debate, Planned Parenthood Votes is reminding Georgians of Gov. Brian Kemp’s abysmal and dangerous record on abortion rights. No matter how Kemp tries to deflect or distract on the debate stage tonight, voters will not forget that he:

  • Banned most abortion in Georgia. In 2019, Kemp signed a law banning abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy, which is before many people even know they’re pregnant. One of the nation’s strictest abortion bans at that time, the law was orginally blocked in 2020 but took effect shortly after Roe v. Wade was overturned, cutting off access to essential health care for thousands of people. Since then, Georgians who need abortion beyond the earliest stages of pregnancy have been forced to flee their state, seek abortion outside of the health care system, or carry a pregnancy against their will.
  • Celebrated the Supreme Court’s devastating decision to overturn Roe v. Wade: While most Americans mourned the loss of their federal constitutional rights, Kemp cheered the Supreme Court ruling that allowed him to interfere in Georgians’ most private and personal health care decisions, calling it a “historic victory.”
  • Is out-of-step with what most Georgians want. No matter how you dice it, Kemp’s extreme and dangerous opposition to abortion simply does not reflect the views of the very people he purports to represent: Nearly 70% of Georgia voters said they opposed the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Unfortunately, their governor didn’t get the memo.

Statement from Amy Kennedy, spokesperson for Planned Parenthood Votes in Georgia:

“Brian Kemp has proven time and time again that he is a danger to the lives and well-being of Georgians and will stop at nothing to strip them of their fundamental rights. While Kemp is obsessed with governing other people’s bodies, Stacey Abrams is focused on actually serving them. As the next governor of Georgia, she will work to reverse Kemp’s draconian abortion ban, restore Georgians’ rights, and expand access to affordable, comprehensive health care for all. The stakes are high, and the choice is clear: Stacey Abrams is a proven fighter for reproductive rights and justice, while Brian Kemp pursues his extreme political agenda at the expense of our health and lives. Georgians deserve better, and we won’t stand for Brian Kemp’s failed leadership any longer.”
