Polls Consistently Show that Voters Want Reproductive Health Champions in Office

Harris, a Champion for Reproductive Health Care, Stands in Stark Contrast to Vice President Pence, Who’s Spent His Career Attacking Planned Parenthood and Reproductive Health

Washington, DC — Joe Biden’s selection of Kamala Harris to serve as his vice president means voters can send a historic pair of reproductive rights allies to the White House this November. Planned Parenthood Votes, which is running its largest ever electoral program in 2020, is ready to get them there.

The first Black and South Asian-American woman on a major party ticket, and the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, Kamala Harris has been a champion for women, families, immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, and civil and reproductive rights. Whether it’s fighting back against attacks on our rights, standing up to the Trump-Pence administration, or championing efforts to expand abortion access, Kamala Harris is a trusted ally for reproductive freedom. With his selection, Joe Biden has made it clear that he is deeply committed to protecting, advancing and expanding reproductive rights and access to health care.

Jenny Lawson, executive director, Planned Parenthood Votes:

"Voters want reproductive health champions in office, and they have one in Kamala Harris. Time and again, she’s fought back against attacks on our reproductive health and rights and shined a spotlight on the health barriers faced by women of color. We are confident she will be a terrific partner in the White House to expand access to care. With the historic Biden-Harris ticket, the choice this November couldn’t be more stark. Voters have had enough of Donald Trump and Mike Pence’s non-stop attacks on their ability to make their own health care decisions. They’re ready for proven, experienced leaders who can help build a world where everyone has access to health care and can control their lives, their bodies, and their futures. Those leaders are Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and Planned Parenthood Votes is ready to organize and mobilize them to victory this November."

In January, Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations launched “We Decide 2020,” the largest electoral program in our history. Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations will make a historic investment of at least $45 million in key battleground states during the 2020 cycle to elect Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and other reproductive rights champions.

Biden has outlined a range of policies to protect and expand access to reproductive health care as president, including abortion — a stark contrast to Donald Trump and Mike Pence, who have spent the past four years attacking our health, rights, and freedoms from all directions and putting access to safe, legal abortion at risk. While Kamala Harris has been a fierce defender of Planned Parenthood and a steadfast champion of reproductive rights, Pence has spent his career fixated on attacking Planned Parenthood and the Constitutional right to an abortion:

  • In Congress, Pence brought the first piece of legislation to “defund” Planned Parenthood to a vote in 2007.
  • As governor of Indiana, Pence signed a law limiting state funds to Planned Parenthood, and signed numerous abortion restrictions into law, in an attempt to undo the precedent set in Roe v. Wade — a decision Pence said should be sent "to the ash heap of history."
  • As vice president, Pence strongly supported a discriminatory rule that forced Planned Parenthood health centers and other providers out of Title X, the federal program for affordable birth control and reproductive care. Pence even said he doesn’t know if he’s had “a greater honor” than to cast the tie-breaking vote in the Senate to roll back protections on access to care at Planned Parenthood.

Poll after poll shows that voters want champions for reproductive health — including the right to access a safe and legal abortion — in public office. Politicians who work to take those rights away aren’t just pursuing bad policy, but a losing political strategy. In both the 2018 and 2019 elections, voters overwhelmingly elected reproductive health champions, while soundly rejecting falsehoods and attacks from politicians with records limiting access to abortion.
