Anti-Abortion Extremist Matt Bevin Loses Governor’s Race in Kentucky

Virginia Flips Both Legislative Chambers to New Historic Reproductive Rights Majorities

Washington, DC Tonight, voters ushered in historic wins for reproductive rights in Kentucky, where Governor-elect Andy Beshear defeated anti-abortion extremist Governor Matt Bevin, and the Virginia state legislature, where Democratic candidates flipped both legislative chambers and created new reproductive rights majorities in Virginia.

Tonight’s election results demonstrate the unstoppable momentum driving voters to the polls to protect reproductive freedom, and prove once again that access to reproductive health care — including safe, legal abortion — is both a top issue heading into 2020 and a winning issue for candidates.

Statement from Kelley Robinson, Executive Director, Planned Parenthood Votes:

“Reproductive freedom has won the day. Voters made their voices heard loud and clear that when politicians fail to stand up for our rights — including abortion access — we will take that fight straight to the ballot box. The stakes for reproductive health care have never been higher, but these victories show that there is an unstoppable momentum for our cause and we have the wind at our backs.

“Tonight’s results also make it clear that the misleading, fear-mongering attacks on abortion from Republicans in Kentucky and Virginia failed because voters overwhelmingly support the right for people to make their own health care decisions without politicians getting in the way. We congratulate all of tonight’s winners, and we look forward to them translating today’s enthusiasm into action to protect and expand reproductive health care and rights for all.”

Leading up to Election Day, Planned Parenthood Action Kentucky UCC ran its first-ever volunteer-based direct voter contact program. Since Gov. Bevin was first elected in 2015, the number of  Planned Parenthood supporters in Kentucky has grown to more than 75,000 statewide. They captured the grassroots energy that built in opposition to Governor Bevin’s severe attacks on abortion, including his signing of four dangerous, medically unnecessary abortion restrictions into law this year alone. In addition to knocking on doors and making phone calls in the weeks leading up to the election, Planned Parenthood Action Kentucky UCC ran targeted digital ads and sent mail pieces to highlight Bevin’s anti-abortion record.

Planned Parenthood Virginia PAC also ran its largest-ever program in state legislative elections, investing more than $1 million to elect reproductive health champions to the state Senate and House of Delegates. The layered campaign reached more than 150,000 Virginia voters through an army of volunteers and canvassers, mail, and targeted advertising. Supporters knocked on nearly 68,000 doors through Planned Parenthood Virginia PAC’s canvassing program, easily surpassing the initial goal of 50,000 doors.
