Washington, DC — Today, Planned Parenthood Votes celebrates the inaugural Black National Convention and honors the work of Black women — the too-often unsung heroes of electoral organizing who have led the charge for change in their communities, and from elected officials. The Black National Convention is produced by the Movement for Black Lives’ Electoral Justice Project, and will focus on the urgent policy priorities of the Black community and Black political power ahead of November’s elections.

Statement from Nia Eshu Martin-Robinson, director of Black leadership and engagement, Planned Parenthood Votes:

"Tonight’s Black National Convention is a historic and necessary event as our country reckons with systemic racism, anti-Blackness and state-sanctioned violence. We are grateful to the brilliant leaders at the Movement for Black Lives and the Electoral Justice Project for their leadership. In this pivotal moment, where we continue to fight for the recognition that Black Lives Matter, and for substantive policy change, the Black National Convention amplifies Black voices and affirms Black political power. For decades, Black women have been the backbone helping to elect champions for reproductive health care  and the unsung heroes and leaders in political organizing. Planned Parenthood Votes honors their impact and is proud to follow the lead of Black women and femme leaders on the front lines, fighting in defense of Black Lives — including the right for every person to have access to sexual and reproductive health care. I encourage everyone to stream the convention tonight, to listen, learn, and be inspired to push for progress."

The Black National Convention can be streamed live at 7 p.m. EST here
