Reproductive rights champion Gideon poised to take on Sen. Susan Collins after Collins-backed Justice Kavanaugh votes twice against reproductive rights

Washington, DC — Planned Parenthood Votes is pleased to congratulate reproductive rights champion Sara Gideon — one of the first Planned Parenthood Action Fund endorsements of 2020 — on her primary win, officially becoming the Democratic candidate to take on Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) in the fall.

As a self-identified former Planned Parenthood patient, Sara knows what it's like to count on Planned Parenthood for care and has been a champion for reproductive rights throughout her legislative career. As Speaker of the House, she championed new laws allowing Mainers to get the care they need when they need it. Planned Parenthood Votes trusts her to continue prioritizing access to health care, including reproductive health care, for all Mainers — no matter where you live or how much money you make.

Mainers deserve a U.S. senator who will fight for their reproductive health and rights, every day and without fail. Instead, Sen. Susan Collins votes to appease the demands of her industry donors, corporate special interests, and her political party — at the expense of Mainers’ health care and reproductive rights. Collins ignored the calls of Mainers and cast a deciding vote to confirm Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. And in just the last two weeks, Kavanaugh voted twice to jeopardize reproductive health care. It’s time for a new senator who will be a true champion for all of Maine’s families: Sara Gideon.

Jenny Lawson, executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes:

“We are thrilled to congratulate former Planned Parenthood patient and reproductive rights champion, Sara Gideon, on her primary victory! Sara is exactly the type of leader Mainers need in Washington: a health care champion, a steadfast defender of reproductive rights and health, and someone who can be counted on to put the needs of her constituents far above the whims of donors and special interests. Every day, it becomes clearer that Susan Collins is no longer the senator she once was. The stakes are too high for Mainers to keep taking chances on a senator who ignores their voices in Washington and won't stand up to Trump when it matters. That's why Planned Parenthood Votes is proud to back Sara Gideon in her campaign for United States Senate.”

Together, Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations will make a historic investment of at least $45 million in key battleground states during the 2020 cycle. Reproductive health is a top issue for voters in the 2020 election — and has been a winning issue for candidates. As we near Election Day 2020, Planned Parenthood Votes' We Decide 2020 campaign will be running a multi-million dollar, multi-faceted campaign to make sure Mainers know the truth about Collins’ record:

  • Susan Collins ignored Mainers and instead stood with Mitch McConnell when she voted for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, putting Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to safe and legal abortion at risk. Collins-backed Justices Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch both dissented and argued in support of upholding Louisiana's medically unnecessary abortion restrictions in June Medical Services v. Russo.
  • Susan Collins has voted to confirm more than 150 Trump judicial nominees to lifetime positions on the federal bench, many of whom are hostile to safe, legal abortion.
  • Susan Collins voted in favor of the Trump-McConnell tax scam, which gave a massive tax handout to billionaires and corporations and put the Affordable Care Act in jeopardy, leaving millions of Americans — and hundreds of thousands of Mainers — at risk of losing health insurance and losing pre-existing conditions protections.
  • Before her election prospects were threatened, Susan Collins had not held a town hall in Maine in years, demonstrating she’s more concerned with the priorities of her corporate special interests and political party than of the constituents she represents.

Susan Collins has left Maine behind and is no longer the leader she once was. It's clear Collins can't be counted on to protect our reproductive rights and health.
