Watch “Floridians Can’t Trust Rubio”

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Planned Parenthood Votes released a new video telling Florida voters that they cannot trust Marco Rubio, who co-sponsored a national abortion ban just weeks after claiming that abortion is an issue best left to the states.

When asked in August whether he’d support a national abortion ban, Rubio told CBS Miami,

“I think right now this issue is appropriately before the states. That’s where it always should have been, and I think that’s where it will be for the foreseeable future.”

But within weeks, Rubio signed on as a cosponsor of Lindsey Graham’s national abortion ban–one of only 9 co-sponsors in the U.S. Senate. Voters across the country have already decried the proposed ban, with recent Navigator polling showing that nearly seven in ten — including a plurality of Republicans — oppose a ban.

Statement from Jenny Lawson, executive director, Planned Parenthood Votes:

“Marco Rubio has always put his personal gain over Floridians’ freedom — and that has never been clearer in his support of a national abortion ban. For over three months now, people in his home state have been deprived of their ability to determine their own lives and futures by a similar ban. Now, he’s prepared to put the health and rights of millions more at risk. Planned Parenthood Votes is doing all that we can to make sure Floridians know that they cannot afford to send Marco Rubio back to the Senate. It is time for voters to take control and elect a champion for abortion rights: Val Demings.”

The new digital video is part of Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations’ 2022 electoral program, “Take Control,” which represents the groups’ largest-ever investment in an electoral cycle.
