Billings, MT — The last time there was a Supreme Court vacancy, which took place nine months before a presidential election, Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) said, “the U.S. Senate should exercise its constitutional powers by not confirming a new Supreme Court justice until the American people elect a new President and have their voices heard.” Now, with the heartbreaking death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg less than 50 days before Election Day, Montanans will be looking to Daines to stick to his word. From now until election day, Planned Parenthood Votes will organize supporters and volunteers to ensure Daines knows that if he hypocritically plays politics and changes course from his previous commitments, it will seal the deal on his already vulnerable election prospects.

For many Montanans, this is a decision that will have life and death consequences, and Indigenous and folks of color, poor people, and women will continue to shoulder the heaviest burdens. Our health, rights, and freedoms are all at considerable risk.

Statement from Laura Terrill, spokesperson, Planned Parenthood Votes in Montana:

“Daines is only out for himself and doesn’t care about Montanans. He’s consistently voted with Trump and Mitch McConnell’s agenda targeting people's health care, including access to safe, legal abortion. Now, if he allows President Trump to fill this vacancy with another extreme, anti-health nominee, then he is going to be held responsible for the elimination of the rights, freedoms, and health care of people across Montana. Steve Daines has a choice when it comes to this Supreme Court vacancy — follow the precedent he supported in 2016, or lose his job. Planned Parenthood Votes and our supporters are watching — and we vote."

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell barely let two hours pass before he declared that, against Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s last sentiments, he would work to confirm her replacement with a President Trump nominee that he has promised “without delay.” Not only is this an offense to Justice Ginsburg’s legacy and an abandonment of the precedent outlined by McConnell himself in 2016, it’s also a politically poisonous move that would guarantee Senator Daines loses his seat.
