Des Moines, IA — Minutes after the nation learned the tragic news that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away, voters in Iowa heard from Sen. Joni Ernst’s (R-IA) campaign. The message was not one of condolence, but an ask for money, saying the future of the Supreme Court was on the line. Despite her apology, Ernst has always put politics ahead of people — and this is no different. Ernst has voted against people’s health and rights for years. We know exactly the type of nominee that she would vote for to replace Justice Ginsburg because she’s previously urged the Supreme Court to reconsider Roe v. Wade.

Sen. Ernst needs to know that if she chooses to play politics and moves to fill this Supreme Court seat this year, it will be the final straw for Iowans who have already had enough of her prioritizing special interests over their needs. The latest Des Moines Register poll has Planned Parenthood Action Fund-endorsed candidate Theresa Greenfield holding a slight lead.

Statement from Jenny Lawson, executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes:

“Joni Ernst didn’t even wait an hour before politicizing the death of Justice Ginsburg.  It’s the most vivid demonstration yet of how she will always put politics before the health and wellbeing of Iowans. For the past six years, she has consistently voted with the agenda of Mitch McConnell and her own dark money special interests, targeting people's health care, including access to safe, legal abortion. If she chooses to side with them again, allowing President Trump to fill this vacancy, then she will be held responsible for the continued elimination of the rights, freedoms, and health care of all Iowans. Her choice is clear: promise to hold a Supreme Court nomination until a new president is inaugurated, or start packing her bags now. Enough is enough. Iowans need Theresa Greenfield — a true health care champion — in the Senate.”

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell barely let two hours pass before he declared that, against Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s last sentiments, he would work to confirm her replacement with a President Trump nominee that he has promised “without delay.” Not only is this an offense to Justice Ginsburg’s legacy and an abandonment of the standard set by McConnell himself in 2016, it’s also a politically poisonous move that would guarantee Senator Ernst loses her seat.
