Washington, DC — Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell barely let two hours pass before he declared that, against Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s last sentiments, he would work to confirm her replacement with a President Trump nominee.  One the President has promised to select “without delay.” Not only is this an offense to Justice Ginsburg’s legacy and an abandonment of the precedent outlined by McConnell himself in 2016, it’s also a politically poisonous move that would put every vulnerable Republican Senator up for re-election even more at risk. With our health and rights on the line, voters do not want the confirmation of a new Supreme Court Justice until their choice for president is in office.

Statement from Jenny Lawson, executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes:

“The stakes just got even higher this election — our health, our bodies, and our lives are all on the line. As the rulings of Justices Kavanaugh and Gorsuch this summer made clear, Trump is committed to nominating Supreme Court Justices who would dramatically restrict abortion access and even put Roe v. Wade at risk. With 77% of the public in support of safe, legal abortion, this is not what voters want. Senators who stand with Trump now and allow him to fill this seat with an extreme nominee in the waning days of his term will be held accountable in November and they are going to be out of a job come January. Planned Parenthood Votes is mobilizing supporters in every state across the country to ensure our rights, freedoms, and health care are protected.”

Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Cory Gardner (R-CO) Joni Ernst (R-IA), John Cornyn (R-TX) and others have a choice: follow McConnell’s precedent they all supported in 2016, or prepare to lose their elections. If Senators allow Trump to jam another extreme nominee who will block access to health care in the final days of his term, it  will be the final straw for many voters across the country.
