Voters do not want senators rushing to confirm a justice like Amy Coney Barrett, who could put their civil and reproductive rights at risk

Washington, DC — Our health care and reproductive rights are at stake. More than 200,000 people have died from COVID-19 in the U.S. Families are struggling through economic turmoil and state-sanctioned violence against Black people that gets ignored by the justice system. But instead of meeting the moment and the needs of their constituents, vulnerable U.S. Senators are instead focused on ramming through a third Trump nominee to the Supreme Court, someone who could threaten our civil liberties, gut the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and undermine access to safe, legal abortion.

Senators Tillis, McSally, Graham, among others, didn’t even wait for Trump to name his nominee before committing to rush to confirm a nominee. Donald Trump has made it clear that he would only appoint justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade and “do the right thing” on the Affordable Care Act by striking it down. Amy Coney Barrett fits the mold, as an active and vocal threat to reproductive health and rights, and someone who believes that Justice Roberts ruled the wrong way in deciding to uphold the ACA. Rushing to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett would not only be a disgrace to Justice Ginsburg’s powerful legacy and her fight to ensure that all people receive equal justice under the law, it would also be a politically perilous move that only fires up voters to kick these senators, who refuse to stand up for reproductive rights and health care access, out of office.

Statement from Jenny Lawson, executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes:

“Vulnerable Republican senators are once again showing us their true colors. Those who allow Trump to jam through a nominee within days of the election, while ignoring the public health crisis that has claimed 200,000 lives, are beyond redemption and deserve to be voted out of office. Thousands of voters concerned about the future of their health care and reproductive rights are already casting ballots across the country, and they are watching closely. No matter what happens in the coming weeks, voting is our most powerful weapon against politicians who have prioritized filling this seat over the health, well-being and economic security of the people. In November, we decide our future, and we will kick these senators out of office."

Last year, Planned Parenthood Votes launched its largest-ever program to help elect reproductive rights champions up and down the ballot in 2020. Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations are making a historic investment of at least $45 million in key battleground states to fund large-scale grassroots organizing programs and targeted canvass, digital, television, radio and mail programs. From the White House to the Senate to statehouses and ballot initiatives across the country, Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations will be there to elect reproductive rights champions and stop Trump’s anti-health care agenda in its tracks.
