With Senator Thom Tillis’ vote to advance Judge Amy Coney Barrett, Tillis is putting the health and rights of North Carolinians at risk

Raleigh, NC — Today, despite mounting calls in North Carolina and across the country to prioritize COVID-19 relief, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) voted to advance Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett, out of the Senate Judiciary committee just twelve days before Election Day.

Tillis has a record of siding with his party and the dangerous Trump-Pence agenda over the health of North Carolinians. He consistently votes with Trump and Mitch McConnell to slash access to health care, including abortion and other sexual and reproductive health care. He repeatedly voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which could jeopardize coverage for birth control and pregnancy care, as well as protections for more than 4.2 million North Carolinians who have pre-existing conditions, such as having been pregnant or having survived domestic violence. Approximately 450,000 North Carolinians could lose the subsidies they purchased through the ACA marketplace. His unpopular position on the ACA would be especially harmful now, in the midst of a pandemic that, due to centuries of systemic racism, is disproportionately affecting communities of color in North Carolina.

Statement from Sarah Riddle, spokesperson, Planned Parenthood Votes in North Carolina:

“With today’s vote to advance Amy Coney Barrett, Senator Tillis has once again failed North Carolinians. Over 2 million North Carolinians have already cast their ballot this cycle and they deserve a say in who nominates and confirms the next Supreme Court justice. Tillis and his colleagues robbed them of that, and potentially of the right to access health care and make their own health care decisions. This November, voters will fire him for it. North Carolinians are energized and motivated like never before to elect Cal Cunningham, an advocate for our health care and reproductive rights."

Polls show that people want the U.S. Senate to vote on a desperately needed COVID-19 relief bill, not rush through a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. In addition, 77% of people support access to safe, legal abortion. But Tillis ignored his constituents by voting to advance Barrett, who has been a vocal opponent of abortion and has demonstrated hostility to abortion rights throughout her career. Trump promised to only appoint justices who will overturn Roe v. Wade and will “do the right thing” by overturning the ACA. If confirmed, Barrett will have the opportunity to fulfill Trump’s promises, with the Supreme Court hearing a case that could strike down the ACA the week after Election Day.

Tillis’ opponent, Cal Cunningham, has been vocal about not having a confirmation hearing until after Inauguration Day 2021. Cunningham understands what’s at stake for sexual and reproductive health in North Carolina, should Amy Coney Barrett become a Supreme Court justice. He supports the protections guaranteed by Roe v. Wade and promised to fight to protect the Affordable Care Act.
