Washington, DC — Today, Planned Parenthood Votes released the following statement two years after Senators Collins (R-ME), Tillis (R-NC), Gardner (R-CO), Ernst (R-IA), Cornyn (R-TX), Perdue (R-GA), and Mitch McConnell (R-KY), voted to confirm Justice Brett Kavanaugh to a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court.

These Senators ignored Kavanaugh's history of alleged sexual assaults, and they endangered reproductive rights and health care access with the vote to confirm. Once on the court, Kavanaugh ruled against access to safe, legal abortion the first chance he got. He also voted in favor of employers and universities that want to refuse birth control coverage under their health insurance plans.

Trump and Senate Republicans have targeted basic reproductive care for years with their frantic and relentless efforts to stack the courts — even during a global health pandemic. Instead of meeting the moment and the significant needs of the country, these vulnerable U.S. Senators are focusing on ramming through a third Trump nominee to the Supreme Court, someone who could threaten our civil liberties, gut the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and undermine access to safe, legal abortion.

Statement from Jenny Lawson, executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes

“Two years ago, these Republican senators voted to put the Affordable Care Act and access to safe, legal abortion at risk by confirming Justice Kavanaugh. Now, we’re voting them out. Voters are ready to elect leaders who will stand up for reproductive rights and health care access, instead of spending their time stacking the courts with judges who are openly hostile to expanded health access. Planned Parenthood Votes won’t let these senators run away from their abysmal records putting our lives and health at risk."

Last year, Planned Parenthood Votes launched its largest-ever program to help elect reproductive rights champions up and down the ballot in 2020. Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations are making a historic investment of at least $45 million in key battleground states, to fund large-scale grassroots organizing programs and targeted canvassing, including digital, television, radio and mail programs. From the White House to the Senate to statehouses and ballot initiatives across the country, Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations will be there to elect reproductive rights champions and stop Trump’s hostile health care agenda in its tracks.

Planned Parenthood Votes is an independent expenditure political committee registered with the Federal Election Commission.
