Statement from Jenny Lawson, executive director, Planned Parenthood Votes:
“Kamala Harris is the reproductive rights champion this country needs as our vice president. She understands that reproductive health care is essential health care, and she knows that when it comes to our health, our bodies, and our futures, WE DECIDE —not politicians. She also knows the struggle for reproductive freedom is intersectional, often highlighting the barriers people of color and people with low incomes face in the current health care system and the disproportionate harm they suffer from Trump’s cruel and racist policies. With his selection of Kamala Harris to serve as vice president, Joe Biden continues to show his commitment to keeping reproductive rights front and center in this election. The Biden-Harris ticket will fight for reproductive health care and Planned Parenthood Votes is going to fight to get them elected."
Kamala Harris is not new to the fight for reproductive freedom. She has a proven record of advocating for accessible health care:
Harris is a strong opponent of the Trump administration’s domestic gag rule on the Title X program, acknowledging that this program is critical to ensuring people with low incomes can access reproductive health care.
Kamala Harris admonished the Trump administration for allowing Texas to bar people covered by the state’s Medicaid family planning program from accessing care at Planned Parenthood health centers.
In the U.S. Senate, Harris is the lead sponsor of the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act of 2020 — a comprehensive set of regulations and investments to address the crisis in Black women’s maternal mortality.
Harris was vocal against unconstitutional TRAP laws that single out abortion providers with onerous and unnecessary regulations and strip people of their right to choose.
Harris opposes the Hyde Amendment, which targets women of color with low incomes, already facing barriers to basix health care access due to systemic racism.
People in this country deserve a president and vice president who will fight for their right to safe, legal abortion and their access to health care. Americans cannot afford four more years of the Trump-Pence administration's attempts to strip away health care and control our bodies and our futures. Planned Parenthood Votes is committed to highlighting the stark contrast in the Trump-Pence and Biden-Harris record on reproductive health care from now until Election Day.
