Planned Parenthood Votes kicks off $3 million electoral program, aims to mobilize thousands of voters across the state in support of champions for reproductive health

Raleigh, NORTH CAROLINA — Today, Planned Parenthood Votes launched its electoral program in North Carolina as part of “We Decide 2020,” the people-powered electoral program to elect reproductive health and rights champions. We Decide 2020 is a $45 million electoral program focusing on key battleground states, including in North Carolina. It is the largest electoral program ever for Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations.

From now until Election Day, Planned Parenthood Votes will be mobilizing supporters to elect champions of reproductive rights up and down the ballot, help people get involved to support their local candidates, and build on their power for the upcoming election. The $3 million program will support Planned Parenthood Action Fund endorsed U.S. Senate candidate Cal Cunningham, and Planned Parenthood Votes South Atlantic endorsed candidates like Gov. Roy Cooper. The program will also work to deliver the state’s 15 electoral votes to Vice President Joe Biden.

Statement from Paige Johnson, Planned Parenthood Votes spokesperson in North Carolina:

"This election is about more than one person or one issue — Election 2020 will impact North Carolinians for generations to come. Since 2010, North Carolina politicians have passed some of the nation's most harmful  measures including racially gerrymandered districts, voter suppression, LGTBQ+ discrimination, and relentless attacks on health care including access to abortion.

Now more than ever we need leaders who will fight to protect and expand our access to health care. That’s why Planned Parenthood Votes is launching our largest-ever electoral program in North Carolina, mobilizing thousands of voters across the state in support of champions for reproductive health. The stakes couldn’t be higher in 2020 and in November we’ll elect reproductive champions up and down the ballot — because our health and our future depend on it.”

As the country grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic and an administration that refuses to respect facts to protect our health, Planned Parenthood Votes will be running an innovative program with an emphasis on outreach that keeps volunteers and voters safe. Planned Parenthood Votes will invest $3 million in a robust voter contact program to help voters cast their ballots by mail, support a sophisticated digital program aimed at electing Cal Cunningham, and aim to flip at least one chamber of the North Carolina General Assembly by targeting 15 legislative districts across the state.

While 38 states have expanded Medicaid, North Carolina's General Assembly majority has refused to do so, in spite of the ongoing pandemic, denying hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians access to health care at a time when health care is essential.

Voters want champions for reproductive health — including the right to access safe and legal abortion — in public office, according to polls. Support for abortion access is at an all-time high, and there is no state in the nation where making abortion illegal is popular. In both the 2018 and 2019 elections, voters overwhelmingly elected reproductive health champions, and soundly rejected the attacks from politicians who oppose abortion. The stakes for reproductive rights in North Carolina could not be higher. From now until Election Day, Planned Parenthood Votes will be working to ensure North Carolinians turn out in force at the ballot box to support reproductive rights champions and retire opponents of safe, legal abortion.

Gov. Roy Cooper (D-NC)

  • Governor Roy Cooper has been a steadfast champion for reproductive rights in his first term. In 2019, Gov. Cooper vetoed Senate Bill 359, which would have targeted health care providers who provide safe and legal abortion care with the threat of a serious criminal penalty.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC)

  • Sen. Thom Tillis is completely out of touch with North Carolinians and their personal decisions, calling abortion a “terrible tragedy.”

  • Tillis has voted repeatedly to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which could jeopardize protections for more than 4.2 million North Carolinians who have pre-existing conditions. He also backed the Trump administration's efforts in this lawsuit and asserted, “I support anything that ultimately takes [the ACA] off the table.”

Cal Cunningham

  • Cal Cunningham supports the protections guaranteed by Roe v. Wade, and affirms that politicians have no place in conversations between a person and their doctor. He has been a consistent voice of support for reproductive health care and said in 2009 that he would have voted against the Stupak Amendment, which would have limited access to abortion under the nation’s health care system.

  • Cunningham has promised to “fight every day to protect the ACA & make sure we build upon it to ensure all Americans have access to the quality care they deserve.”

Flipping the North Carolina General Assembly

  • Through their robust digital campaign, Planned Parenthood Votes will be targeting a total 15 legislative districts in an effort to flip at least one chamber of the North Carolina General Assembly.

  • Currently, both chambers are controlled by abortion opponents and extremists opposed to improving health care access, making it impossible to pass legislation that protects abortion access and expand Medicaid to more than 500,000 North Carolinians.

  • These targets span across the state and will support candidates who are dedicated to protecting and expanding access to safe, legal abortion.
