Planned Parenthood Votes kicks off largest-ever electoral program in earnest, will work to contact more than 600,000 voters across the state to support champions for reproductive health

Phoenix, AZ  Today, Planned Parenthood Votes officially launched its electoral program as part of “We Decide 2020,” the people-powered electoral program to elect champions for reproductive rights up and down the 2020 ballot. We Decide 2020 is the largest electoral program ever for Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations with a historic investment of at least $45 million in key battleground states.

From now until Election Day, Planned Parenthood Votes will work to reach more than 600,000 voters through phone calls, mail boxes, online engagement, one-on-one conversations with friends and family, and more, in an effort to elect champions for reproductive rights. The $2.6 million program will support efforts to send Mark Kelly to the U.S. Senate, ensure Arizona’s 11 electoral votes go to Vice President Joe Biden, and help flip the Arizona House and Senate to reproductive rights majorities.

Statement from Kelley Dupps, Planned Parenthood Votes, in Arizona:

“Arizonans have had enough of politicians at the federal and local levels who dismantle their health and rights before their eyes.  If unelected Senator Martha McSally, Donald Trump, and Mike Pence had their way, they would have “defunded” Planned Parenthood health centers across Arizona, roughly  700,000 Arizonans could have lost their health coverage, and protections for people with pre-existing conditions would be eliminated in the middle of a global pandemicThese attacks have been felt most keenly by our Latinx neighbors, who are also disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 because of systemic racism and inequities in our health care systems. But Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations have fought back against these attacks in Arizona, and we’re going to build on our success from the 2018 elections, and the relationships we’ve developed in our communities, to continue to elect reproductive rights champions to office up and down the ballot. To the politicians who dare attack our health and rights — prepare to lose your jobs."

As the country grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic and an administration that refuses to respect facts to protect our health, Planned Parenthood Votes will be running an innovative program with an emphasis on outreach that keeps volunteers and voters safe. Planned Parenthood Votes will invest seven figures in a robust voter contact program, including relational organizing, digital advertising, and phone and text banking to help voters cast their ballots by mail, drop at ballot boxes, and how to follow the most current public health guidance if voting in person. Thirty percent of the electorate in Arizona identifies as Latinx, a community that has been impacted by COVID-19 disproportionately in comparison to their white counterparts. The efforts of Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations  to engage and build relationships with these communities, in tandem with local coalitions with whom we have been working for the past decade, will be crucial in ensuring that Latinx voters are active participants in this election.

Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations have a record of success electing reproductive champions in Arizona. In 2018, Planned Parenthood Votes ran a robust campaign in Arizona that helped successfully elect Kyrsten Sinema to the U.S. Senate and Anne Kirkpatrick to the U.S. House — flipping both seats in the process. And just last week, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona helped defeat an anti-abortion candidate in the Democratic primary in Legislative District 27. Planned Parenthood Votes plans to build on these successes and run a statewide campaign to change who represents Arizona at every level and in every region, including working to flip state legislative districts in Coconino, Pima and Maricopa counties.

Voters want champions for reproductive health — including the right to access a safe and legal abortion — in public office, according to polls. Support for abortion access is at an all-time high, and there is no state in the nation where banning abortion is popular. In both the 2018 and 2019 elections, voters overwhelmingly elected reproductive health champions, and soundly rejected the attacks from  politicians who oppose abortion. The stakes for reproductive rights in Arizona could not be higher. From now until Election Day, Planned Parenthood Votes will be working to ensure Arizonans turn out in force at the ballot box to support reproductive rights champions like Mark Kelly, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and more.

  • Arizonans have a champion in Mark Kelly, who will fight nonstop to protect our health care because he understands the stakes for reproductive rights in the Grand Canyon State. Kelly pledged to fight back against “any threat to women's reproductive rights” and to defend Roe v. Wade. He has also stood up against Trump and McSally’s plans to slash the Affordable Care Act and gut protections for the 2.8 million Arizonians with pre-existing conditions.
  • In contrast, Martha McSally will always side with Trump and Mitch McConnell’s agenda to overturn the ACA, along with her insurance industry donors. She voted 8 times to deny Planned Parenthood health centers their critical funding, which would have put reproductive health care services for Arizonans in jeopardy, and voted multiple times to repeal the Affordable Care Act, jeopardizing coverage for more than 700,000 Arizonans and eliminating protections for people with pre-existing conditions. .

Planned Parenthood Votes is an independent expenditure political committee registered with the Federal Election Commission.
