Florida 2018 Race

Sen. Bill Nelson (D) has repeatedly fought to protect health care in the Sunshine State. Nelson has a long record of fighting against measures to “defund” Planned Parenthood, standing up for protections for people with pre-existing conditions, and supporting measures to help families with low incomes afford health care.

His opponent, Rick Scott, has spent the last seven years as governor blocking his constituents from accessing health care –– pushing legislation that banned abortion, blocking access to birth control and cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood, and refusing to expand Medicaid.

This November, Floridians have a clear choice.

Senate Candidates

Bill Nelson (D), Incumbent

For his entire career, Sen. Bill Nelson has stood with Planned Parenthood patients time and time again — in fact, he has a 100 percent on the Planned Parenthood Action Fund Congressional Scorecard. He understands the importance of Planned Parenthood health centers, and has lauded Planned Parenthood for providing “thousands of people across the country and Florida with essential health care.”

Nelson has repeatedly held the Trump-Pence administration accountable for its efforts to take away reproductive rights. When the Trump-Pence administration attempted to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Nelson pushed back. He supported legislation to block the rollback of the contraception mandate in the ACA, and he criticized legislation that would have allowed employers to discriminate against employees based on their personal objections.

He also worked on bipartisan legislation to lower health care premiums, fought to protect CHIP and Medicaid — which 4.4 million Floridians rely on —  and spoke out against the #GOPTaxScam, which could cost millions of people to lose access to health care.

Rick Scott (R)

Rick Scott, the current governor of Florida, is a close ally to the Trump-Pence administration and a staunch opponent of reproductive rights, Planned Parenthood, and access to health care.

As governor, Scott signed into law several intrusive, onerous anti-abortion bills — some of which were later ruled unconstitutional for restricting reproductive rights. In 2016, he passed one of the most restrictive anti-abortion laws in the country. The law eliminated access to birth control, cancer screenings, STD testing, and other care at Planned Parenthood health centers, which women in Florida were not happy about. The law risked the health of more than 66,000 Floridians who rely on Planned Parenthood for care every year.

Not stopping there, Scott also spent thousands of taxpayer dollars on a discredited smear campaign against Planned Parenthood and helped fundfake women’s health centers, which often give patients inaccurate information about birth control and abortion.

He also worked closely with the Trump-Pence administration in the past — going so far as to team up with Vice President Mike Pence to actively campaign to repeal Obamacare. He didn’t seem to care that Trumpcare and repealing the ACA would have dramatically raised health care costs for millions of his constituents.

Rick Scott also plays politics with people’s lives , saying and doing whatever is politically expedient at the time. After commending Medicaid expansion, he instead took bold efforts to slash the program’s funding –– threatening care for tens of thousands of people with low incomes in Florida. He made similar reversals around his positions on gun control and immigration, and it’s likely he’d continue this tradition in Washington.
