JEANNE SHAHEEN (D), Incumbent
The first woman to serve as both governor and senator in New Hampshire, Shaheen is a proven advocate for protection and expansion of access to sexual and reproductive health care.
Defunding Planned Parenthood … is a dangerous, politically motivated attack on women and I will not stand for it.
Jeanne Shaheen, Jan. 5, 2017
Shaheen has provided steady and unswerving support for access to reproductive care. During efforts to pass the Affordable Care Act, she helped to block the addition of abortion restrictions to the bill — calling amendments proposed by anti-abortion politicians “a very far-reaching intrusion into the lives of women.”
As New Hampshire’s governor, Shaheen signed the 1997 repeal of an archaic, unconstitutional state law that criminalized abortion. She continues to oppose abortion bans, including the bans passed by anti-abortion politicians in multiple states in 2019.
