Sen. Bill Nelson (D)

A longtime women’s health champion who stands up for Planned Parenthood patients.

Tell President Trump and Republican extremists: Support women's health care funding! Don’t ‘defund’ Planned Parenthood!

While working in the Senate for over a decade, Sen. Bill Nelson (D) has repeatedly fought to protect health care in the Sunshine State. Nelson has a long record of fighting against measures to “defund” Planned Parenthood, standing up for protections for people with pre-existing conditions, and supporting measures to help families with low incomes afford health care. In fact, he has a 100 percent perfect score on the Planned Parenthood Action Fund Congressional Scorecard.

Why We Support Bill Nelson

  • He has a 100 percent on the Planned Parenthood Action Fund Congressional Scorecard

  • He’s worked across party lines to lower health care premiums

  • He’s stood up for Planned Parenthood patients time after time

Bill Nelson on the Issues:

Nelson knows that access to safe, legal abortion is “a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution,” and supported abortion access when the Supreme Court heard the landmark case, Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, in 2016. In the Senate, Nelson voted against a bill that would ban abortion after 20 weeks and has always supported a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions.

Access to Health Care

Nelson has repeatedly held President Donald Trump’s administration accountable for its efforts to chip away at health care. When Congress tried to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) multiple times in 2017, Nelson pushed back and voted against those attempts.

He also worked on bipartisan legislation to lower health care premiums, fought to protect the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and Medicaid — which 4.4 million Floridians rely on —  and spoke out against the #GOPTaxScam, which could cost millions of people to lose access to health care. In 2014, Nelson called out Florida state legislators for not expanding Medicaid in the state, saying, “that seems unconscionable.”

Birth Control

Nelson supported the Protect Access to Birth Control Now Act, which was introduced to block President Donald Trump from rolling back the ACA’s contraception benefit that allowed millions of people to access no-copay birth control. In 2016, he opposed a bill that would have allowed employers to discriminate based on an employee’s reproductive health decisions, including the use of contraceptives.

Health Equity for All

Nelson has the health care of everyone in mind. In 2016, he criticized legislation that would have allowed employers to discriminate against employees based on their personal objections. In 2017, Nelson joined a bipartisan coalition urging President Donald Trump’s administration to address the health care needs of Puerto Ricans.

Protecting Planned Parenthood Patients

Sen. Bill Nelson has stood with Planned Parenthood patients for his entire career — in fact, he has a 100 percent perfect score on the Planned Parenthood Action Fund Congressional Scorecard. In 2017, Nelson voted against Congress’s attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), gut Medicaid, and “defund” Planned Parenthood.

Nelson understands the importance of Planned Parenthood health centers — which serve over 66,000 Floridians every year — and has lauded Planned Parenthood for providing “thousands of people across the country and Florida with essential health care.” Nelson even wore a Planned Parenthood pink scarf during the 2017 Women’s March.

Rick Scott (R)

A radical politician who has sought to "defund" Planned Parenthood

I believe that abortion is wrong and Roe versus Wade should be overturned.

Rick Scott, the current governor of Florida, is a close ally to President Donald Trump and a notorious opponent of reproductive rights. Scott has spent the last seven years as governor blocking his constituents from accessing health care –– pushing legislation that banned abortion, signing a bill that would have “defunded” Planned Parenthood, and refusing to expand Medicaid.

Why We Don't Support Rick Scott

  • He signed a bill to “defund” Planned Parenthood in Florida

  • He’s signed several dangerous abortion bans into law and wants to overturn Roe v. Wade

  • He teamed up with Vice President Mike Pence to campaign against the Affordable Care Act (ACA)

Rick Scott on the Issues:

According to Scott, “abortion is wrong and Roe versus Wade should be overturned.” As governor, Scott signed several different anti-abortion bills into law — some of which were later ruled unconstitutional for restricting reproductive rights.

In 2016, he passed one of the most restrictive anti-abortion laws in the country. In addition to restricting abortion access, the law eliminated access to birth control, cancer screenings, STD testing, and other care at Planned Parenthood health centers — putting the health of more than 66,000 Floridians who rely on Planned Parenthood for care at risk.

Earlier this year, Scott even signed a law directing state funds to crisis pregnancy centers, which intentionally mislead women about their health care options. This anti-women work earned him high praise from the president of the Susan B. Anthony List — one of the largest anti-abortion organizations in the country.

Access to Health Care

In Scott’s opinion, “we have to completely repeal Obamacare.” He worked closely with President Donald Trump’s administration to undermine health care — going so far as to team up with Vice President Mike Pence to actively campaign to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA). He didn’t seem to care that repealing the ACA would have dramatically raised health costs for millions of his constituents — 4.4 million of whom rely on the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and Medicaid to access health care.

When it comes to health care, Scott plays politics with people’s lives — saying and doing whatever is politically convenient at the time. After initially commending Medicaid expansion, he instead took bold efforts to slash the program’s funding. He made similar reversals around his positions on immigration, and he’d continue this tradition in Washington.

Health Equity for All

It’s clear that Scott doesn’t have everyone’s health care in mind. In 2011, Scott rejected funding that would’ve helped educate teenagers on preventing unplanned pregnancies, and in 2012, Scott vetoed $1.5 million that would have been allocated to fight sexual violence.

To top it all off, Scott has an A-plus rating from the NRA.

Protecting Planned Parenthood Patients

Simply put, Scott doesn’t care about Planned Parenthood patients. In 2016, as governor, Scott signed a bill that would “defund” Planned Parenthood and other health clinics that provide abortions in Florida. This plan, however, was blocked by a judge.

Scott also spent thousands of taxpayer dollars on a discredited smear campaign against Planned Parenthood and helped fund fake women’s health centers, which often give patients inaccurate information about birth control and abortion.
