Sen. Sherrod Brown (D)

A longtime advocate who trusts women to make their own health care decisions

I will always trust Ohio women to make their health care decisions.

— Sherrod Brown

Source: Politico

Since he was sworn into the Senate in 2007, Sherrod Brown has been a fearless supporter of reproductive rights. Earlier this year, Brown protested an Ohio abortion ban that would have criminalized safe, legal abortion.

He’s also fought to protect access to no-copay birth control. Given his record, Brown earned a 100 percent on Planned Parenthood Action Fund's congressional scorecard. If Brown is re-elected senator, he will continue fighting for reproductive health and rights. Brown is endorsed by Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

Why We Support Sherrod Brown

  • He earned a 100 percent on Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s congressional scorecard

  • He fought against Congress’s attempts to block people from accessing care at Planned Parenthood

  • He supports access to safe, legal abortion and wants to expand birth control access

Sherrod Brown on the Issues:

Brown supports a person’s right to safe, legal abortion, underscoring that he “will always trust Ohio women to make their health care decisions.” He opposes attempts to restrict abortion access, and he called on President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice to enforce anti-harassment laws at health centers that provide abortion.

Recently, Brown spoke out against Ohio’s failed six-week abortion ban, which would have banned abortion in the state of Ohio before most women know they’re pregnant.

Access to Health Care

One of Brown’s priorities is protecting Medicaid, which nearly three million Ohioans rely on to access health care. He’s voted multiple times against repealing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which would cut Medicaid and restrict women’s reproductive health care access. Brown was also a co-sponsor of the Women’s Health Amendment in the ACA, which required health insurance plans to fully cover comprehensive women’s preventive care services.

Birth Control

Brown supports access to contraception, and consistently votes for legislation that would expand access to birth control. He recently called on the Trump administration to rescind rules that restrict birth control coverage. Brown also co-sponsored an amendment in the Affordable Care Act that required all health plans to cover comprehensive women’s preventive care, including birth control.

Health Equity for All

If Brown is re-elected senator, he will continue to fight for equity — no matter who you are or where you come from. He is a longtime supporter of LGBTQ communities, stating that “LGBTQ rights are human rights and civil rights.” He opposes President Donald Trump’s proposed ban on transgender servicemembers. He also supports immigrant rights and has admonished the Trump administration for deporting undocumented immigrants.

Protecting Planned Parenthood Patients

Brown is an outspoken supporter of Planned Parenthood patients, declaring on the Senate floor that he was “proud to stand with Planned Parenthood against a tide of relentless political attacks.” He’s put those words to action by defending against threats to “defund” Planned Parenthood time and time again.

In 2017, Brown voted multiple times against attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and “defund” Planned Parenthood. Most recently, he co-wrote a letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, calling out the administration’s decision to allow health care providers to discriminate against people seeking abortion.

Jim Renacci (R)

A radical politician running to “protect the future of President Trump’s agenda”

I was asked to help protect the future of President Trump's agenda by entering Ohio's 2018 race for the United States Senate.

—Jim Renacci

Jim Renacci is running for Ohio governor on a platform that’s anti-abortion and anti-women. As a member of Congress, Renacci voted and advocated for a number of dangerous health care measures, including abortion bans and efforts to block thousands of Ohioans from birth control and cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood.

A full-blown Trump loyalist, he’s voted in line with Trump’s positions 92.3 percent of the time. He even went so far as to declare that the goal of his campaign run was to “protect the future of President Trump's agenda.” That’s not a future we want.

Why We Oppose Jim Renacci

  • He wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act

  • He recently co-sponsored a nationwide 20-week abortion ban

  • He wants to restrict access to no-copay birth control

Jim Renacci on the Issues:

Renacci is notorious for his anti-abortion stance. As a member of the House’s Pro-Life Caucus, he co-sponsored and voted for multiple abortion bans. Recently, he co-sponsored a nationwide 20-week abortion ban. In 2017, he advocated for a bill that would make the harmful Hyde Amendment, which prevents taxpayer money from funding abortion, even worse.

Renacci relishes that his anti-abortion policies align with President Trump’s administration, saying, “With the election of President Trump, we have the unique opportunity to bring awareness to the sanctity of life and pass legislation that reaffirms the value of life.”

Access to Health Care

One of Renacci’s top priorities is to “end Obamacare” by completely repealing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), despite the fact that this would jeopardize health care for almost one million Ohioans. To date, he’s voted against the ACA more than 50 times. Renacci also opposes Ohio’s decision to expand Medicaid under the ACA, and he supported a bill that would repeal Medicaid expansion nationwide.

Birth Control

Renacci doesn’t believe women should have access to no-copay birth control, which has benefitted over 62 million women. He criticized the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate, arguing that employers should be able to block a woman’s birth control coverage for any personal reason they choose.

Health Equity for All

Renacci doesn’t support LGBTQ health and rights, arguing that “marriage should be between one man and one woman.” He also opposes immigrant rights, and he even defended President Donald Trump’s profane outburst about immigrants to the U.S. from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries.

On top of that, Renacci supports allowing guns in schools and concealed carry in government buildings. Earlier this year, he stated that he would support measures to allow Ohio teachers and officials to carry guns in K-12 schools.

Protecting Planned Parenthood Patients

More than 80,000 Ohioans rely on Planned Parenthood health centers for care each year. Yet Renacci has repeatedly threatened this access. In 2016, he hailed a bill to “defund” Planned Parenthood as an example of “good policy for American workers and families.” In 2017, he voted to “defund” Planned Parenthood and block tens of thousands of patients from accessing birth control and cancer screenings.

Gubernatorial Candidates

  • Richard Cordray (D), Endorsed
  • Mike DeWine (R)

Richard Cordray (D), Endorsed

A women’s health champion who will defend Ohioans’ health and rights

Women want to be able to give their best every day without having to deal with oppressive obstacles posed by sexual harassment and stereotyping. We need to stand with them and make this right.

—Richard Cordray

Ohio has some of the worst anti-women policies in the country, which is why one of Rich Cordray’s priorities will be to restore funding for Planned Parenthood health centers. Cordray has also pledged to fight abortion bans and restrictions in Ohio — like the total abortion ban introduced in the Ohio state House earlier this year.

Cordray has been outspoken against sexual assault and harassment, and is a strong supporter of Medicaid expansion in Ohio. If elected governor, he will stand up for women and stand up to radical state legislators and President Donald Trump. Rich Cordray is endorsed by Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio.

Why We Support Rich Cordray

  • He pledged to restore funding for Planned Parenthood health centers in Ohio

  • He will protect the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Medicaid expansion

  • He’s pro-choice and will stand up to Ohio’s anti-abortion laws

Rich Cordray on the Issues:

Cordray supports a person’s right to safe, legal abortion and has pledged to fight and uphold this right. He has described the 20 abortion restrictions passed in Ohio over the last seven years as an “extreme agenda.”

Cordray has stated that he “[stands] strongly for a woman’s right to make her own personal health decisions.”

Access to Health Care

One of Cordray’s main priorities is protecting Medicaid expansion in Ohio, which nearly three million people in the state rely on. Cordray supports the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and understands that all Ohioans deserve access to quality, affordable health care.

He spoke out against President Donald Trump’s attempts to cut Medicare and Medicaid, and has held Ohio’s Republican gubernatorial nominee, Mike DeWine, accountable for refusing to protect Medicaid expansion.

Health Equity for All

Cordray’s vision for Ohio is one where everyone has access to quality affordable health care, no matter who they are or where they come from. He is an outspoken fighter for the rights of people with low incomes and people with disabilities.

He also supported legislation that would ban discrimination against LGBTQ folks living in Ohio.

Protecting Planned Parenthood Patients

If elected governor, Cordray will support the more than 80,000 people who get the care they need at Planned Parenthood health centers in the Buckeye state.

Earlier this year, he pledged to “work to restore funding for Planned Parenthood” in Ohio and has criticized Ohio’s Republican gubernatorial nominee, Mike DeWine, for attacking Planned Parenthood patients and health centers. Cordray has stated that he is “proud” to be endorsed by Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio.

Mike DeWine (R)

A radical Trump ally who’s made it his personal mission to “defund” Planned Parenthood

For example, the heartbeat bill. Gov. Kasich vetoed the bill. I would have signed the bill.

— Mike DeWine

Source: The Columbus Dispatch

If elected governor, Mike DeWine, who currently serves as Ohio’s attorney general, would be a disaster for women’s health and rights. For over a decade, DeWine has supported overturning Roe v. Wade, which he claims was “poorly decided.”

As a senator from Ohio, DeWine supported several abortion bans and even authored one of his own. As Ohio’s attorney general, DeWine has supported laws that make it harder for women to access health care. He opposes Medicaid expansion and wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Simply put, if DeWine is elected governor, our right to control our own bodies would be put at risk.

Why We Oppose Mike DeWine

  • He wants to outlaw abortion before most women know they’re pregnant

  • He fought tooth and nail against policies to extend access to contraception to Ohio women

  • He’s used his office to launch baseless attacks on Planned Parenthood, at the expense of taxpayers

Mike DeWine on the Issues:

DeWine is one of the most notorious anti-abortion politicians in the country. He’s bragged about his 100 percent rating from the National Right to Life Foundation, which is one of the largest anti-abortion groups in the country. Recently, DeWine said he would sign a bill to ban abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, which is before most  people even know they’re pregnant.

As Ohio attorney general, DeWine has used his power to uphold strict anti-abortion laws and has supported the Trump-Pence administration’s efforts to keep women from obtaining abortions. While he worked to attack women’s rights, DeWine was in “close contact” with anti-abortion ideologues.

As a senator, DeWine argued against the right to safe, legal abortion established in Roe v. Wade, saying the decision is not “super duper precedent or super precedent.”

Access to Health Care

Thousands of people could lose health care if DeWine is elected governor. DeWine trashed Ohio’s Medicaid expansion, which has extended access to health care to 700,000 people. Even fellow Republican Gov. John Kasich hasn’t endorsed DeWine over fears that DeWine would end the Medicaid expansion.

Birth Control

DeWine has spent years attacking access to affordable contraception for Ohio women. He has used the courts to attack a rule that extended access to affordable birth control for women and sued the Obama administration over it.

After the Supreme Court made its decision in the Hobby Lobby case to make it easier for employers to deny coverage to women, DeWine praised the decision. DeWine simply does not support women having access to affordable birth control options.

Health Equity for All

DeWine does not believe that all Ohioans should be treated equally. He has fought against the rights of LGBTQ Ohioans, even costing taxpayers $1.3 million to defend the state’s ban on gay marriage.

DeWine does not want Ohio to be a welcoming place for immigrants. DeWine signed on to a brief in 2016 to challenge the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and cause harm to the more than 4,400 young people in Ohio who are able to live and work legally under the program.

Protecting Planned Parenthood Patients

DeWine has spent thousands of taxpayer dollars on a bogus witch hunt to attack Planned Parenthood and its patients in Ohio.

In 2015, DeWine made a series of baseless claims about Planned Parenthood health centers in Ohio, which were blatantly false and ended up costing the state $45,000 to settle DeWine’s false claims. As attorney general, DeWine has also used maneuvers to attack Planned Parenthood through the courts.
