Albany, NY – Today Senator John Flanagan attempted to evade responsibility for shutting down the Senate for the second day in a row by blaming Senate Democrats for standing up for New Yorker’s health and well-being. In doing so, Senator Flanagan used talking points which demean and insult women and their health care providers.
Statement from Robin Chappelle Golston, President of Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts:
"Senator Flanagan's comment that the Reproductive Health Act (RHA) allows abortion up until the moment of birth is downright offensive to the women of New York and the providers that compassionately care for their reproductive health care needs. Nearly 99 percent of abortions occur before 21 weeks, but when they are needed later in pregnancy, it’s often in very complex medical circumstances. Senator Flanagan’s comments imply that women can’t be trusted with their own health care. RHA ensures that women can access the care they need - and have a constitutional right to obtain - here in New York. To suggest otherwise is disingenuous and insulting."
Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts is a non-profit, statewide organization dedicated to protecting and expanding access to a full range of reproductive health care services. It represents New York’s Planned Parenthood affiliates and works to protect and expand access to reproductive health care for all New Yorkers.
