Albany, NY –  Today, the Senate GOP leadership abruptly halted legislative session rather than face a potential vote on reproductive health care legislation. Following yesterday’s attempt by the Senate Democratic Conference to force a floor vote on the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act and the Reproductive Health Act, this marks the second day of GOP leadership shutting down all floor activity.  Long supported by New York State’s Planned Parenthoods and fellow reproductive health groups, both bills have been passed for years by the Assembly but remain stalled in the upper house as the Senate Republican Majority consistently refuses to allow the legislation to be brought to the floor.

Statement from Robin Chappelle Golston, President of Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts:

“This week our state Senate’s GOP leadership has proven that they would rather shut down the legislative process rather than risk our state standing up for our reproductive health care and rights. While the federal administration peddles public policies that erode our health care and well-being, New Yorker’s expect decisive leadership that trusts women, but our state Senate has chosen to sidestep that responsibility. Politics has no place in the exam room, and we will never stop fighting until our health care, and rights are secure. Thanks to our champions, the Senate Democrats, who are unafraid to be called on and stand up in support of our health care and rights.”
