Planned Parenthood Statement on Governor Cuomo’s Action to Combat Maternal Depression
(Albany, NY) Today Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today launched a new multi-agency effort to combat maternal depression. Included in this effort is an awareness campaign providing information about maternal depression and treatment options, requiring all New York commercial health insurance policies to cover maternal depression screenings - including screening for the mother under the child's policy - and opening a State-operated intensive outpatient clinic focused on maternal depression. This effort is part of the Governor's 2018 Women's Agenda.
Robin Chappelle Golston, President, and CEO, Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts:
"Maternal depression is a common occurrence, but far too many women suffer in silence. Our mental health is just as important as our physical health, but stigma and lack of resources can be insurmountable barriers for far too many New York mothers. Governor Cuomo’s new initiative helps mothers and babies get the healthy start they deserve. Today’s action will help combat stigma, raise awareness, and ensure health insurance coverage for treatment.”
Planned Parenthood health centers are in communities statewide providing quality, affordable health care to New Yorkers, including prenatal care at some locations.
Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts is a non-profit, statewide organization dedicated to protecting and expanding access to a full range of reproductive health care services. It represents New York’s Planned Parenthood affiliates and works to protect and expand access to reproductive health care for all New Yorkers.
