Wait...What's Budget Season Anyway?

Each year, the Governor and both chambers of the Legislature work together to pass the state's budget. This process begins with the Governor's Budget Address, typically in late February or early March, which includes the Governor's proposals and priorities for the coming year.

The Legislature then begins the process to prepare its own budget proposal, called the Appropriations Act, which must be signed into law by the Governor by June 30.

Family Planning Funding

Family planning funding supports a wide range of services at providers across the state, including federally qualified health centers, Planned Parenthoods, hospital-based providers, county health departments, and other non-profit providers. Family planning services include:

  • Lifesaving cancer screenings
  • Affordable birth control
  • Testing and treatment for STIs and HIV
Funding to Increase Security and Improve Facilities

In 2022, a Planned Parenthood health center in New Brunswick lost their lease due to soaring disruptive protest activity. While a new health center was able to open less than a mile away in Franklin Township, the threats to abortion facilities are surging in intensity and frequency. Across the country reproductive health care providers are experiencing ever-increasing attacks, making funds to increase security protections an imperative investment in public safety.

When family planning funding is cut - as was the case during the eight years of the Christie Administration, totaling over $60 million - typically facility upgrades and improvements are on the chopping block. Given the increased demand for services coupled with the historic impact of 8 years with no funding, investing in reproductive health care facilities is imperative to serving some of the State’s most vulnerable residents.

Funding to Train Reproductive Health Care Providers

With the 2021 Board of Medical Examiners decision to allow advanced practice clinicians to provide abortions, it is important that these newly eligible providers are able to receive training. Amidst nationwide healthcare staffing shortages, investments in provider training strengthens and fortifies the reproductive health care workforce.

Now It's Time for You to Take Action.

We'll be straight with you— finalizing the budget is a long, oftentimes grueling process that will require dedication, patience, and some stamina on getting this done. This process is democracy at work.

When the going gets tough, remember that the state's continued investment in reproductive health care has a real and direct impact on our ability to provide care for our patients, which is at the core of what we do.

We're counting on you to keep the energy high and keep the advocacy going from now until June 30.
